Kurt, in my neighborhood, we all have cedar siding, and after we stain, it doesn't seem to stop them from coming back.

Most recommendations are to mount them on poles rather than trees or houses.

When we lived in Gainesville FL, our biologist friend had very good success with his in a tree about 15 to 20 feet off the ground. He had a wooded lot and it was not real close to the house.

In Gainesville by Lake Alice near my house there - as I recall it took quite a few years for the bats to inhabit.
