Back in the late 60's when the tar balls would float up on the beach we would remove the oil from our feet with "suntan oil".

Just a quick squirt and rub of the "oil" on the feet will take it off.

Not suntan lotion but "suntan oil" works.

For bathing suits you can carefully apply acetone to the areas wearing gloves. Make sure you completely rinse out the suit with soap and water.

Better yet put on last years suit and you won't have to worry about it! ;-)

I have spent many hours Googling this topic, and Dawn dishwashing liquid seems to be the best and least toxic alternative for removing tar. So much better than the mineral spirits we used back when we vacationed in Bermuda every year.

Although we still miss swimming with the absolutely gorgeous fish in Bermuda.

I grew up on the beach in Ft. Lauderdale. My mom wouldn't allow my twin brother and me back into the house until we washed off with mineral spirits. She kept a plastic jug of it at the back door. I don't think Dawn was around back then.

The Dawn dishwashing liquid works great on the tar balls we've encountered so far. No need for kerosene, mineral spirits, or acetone on the fabric.

As I mentioned before, we used baby oil back in the day. Not sure what we used on fabrics...maybe Shout. We just had swim suits and flip flops that pretty much stayed covered with tar the entire vacation.

I heard baby oil too, I'm just not too sure how that would work with our tile floors.

Try the sun tan oil most beach goers always have it in their beach bags. It's amazing.

Yeah, slippery - makes me accidentally kick off my flops. I am more surprised that there were tarballs in the 60's? In Walton Co.? WOW!
