speaking of plastic bags,
The Ditty Bops Live at Swedish American Hall in San Francisco on 2007-03-16

DSC_29101dx.jpg

For their latest tour earlier this month with Jesca Hoop, The Ditty Bops wore tops made of plastic bags and urged the signing of their petition curbing the use of plastic bags.

At the San Francisco show, Abby and Amanda were presented with a Certificate of Honor from the city by Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi honoring the duo for their environmental efforts. You can listen to the show here and the presentation here (thanks to Danielle and Dave).

Coincidentally enough, earlier this week, "San Francisco's Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to become the first U.S. city to ban plastic bags from large supermarkets to help promote recycling." It was Mirkarimi who sponsored the bill. Read the news @ CNN here and The Los Angeles Times here.

NEXT SHOW:

On May 14th, The Ditty Bops will be performing at noontime on the South Lawn @ City Hall in Downtown Los Angeles as part of Bike to Work Week, which runs from May 14th-18th.

In addition, it's a free show, all ages are welcome, and it's open to the public! See you there!

(Thanks to Koga for the photos.)

Reminds me of a history lesson. George Washington Carver was crazy about anything to do with peanuts, and he invented plastic made from peanuts way before we ever came along. Henry Ford actually had a trunk of a prototype car made from the peanut plastic which Carver invented. Why we weren't using this technology long ago, is well beyond me. My guess is that politricks and the white man's knowledge of there being an extremely intelligent black man in the world, was too scary for the white man to fathom. Edison and Ford were buddy, buddy, and I think it was Edison who brought light :)idea:) to Carver's invention and showed it to Ford.

Good job, Peaboy, on the corn based bags. :clap_1: I hate seeing so many plastic bags floating around. It seems such a waste. I encouraged WaterColor Publix to make reusuable canvas bags available for purchase a year or so ago, and they listened, though I rarely see the public using them. It takes a little bit of work to change our habits. I may grab a bag from you the next time I am in so that I can conduct a little experiment with decomposition.
I look forward to the day that, at the grocer's there will be one display item with the full, wasteful packaging, and the items for sale will have the least packaging needed to preserve or contain the product. Our garbage cans would be half empty immediately.

What a great idea that will likely never be implented due to packaging laws. ex- Dad runs the grocery store and buys Lemon Fresh Pledge, brings it home, and little Susie, who never had the opportunity to read the display in the store, sprays it in her eyes and is blinded for life.

yea.....but that scenario hinges on the idea that the stuff we bring home and spray on our furniture has the capability of blinding the user for life. It might be time to rethink that product. Surely there is a way to dust furniture without the threat of bodily harm. Thusly, there are stores like For The Health of It that make those products available.

You are right. My example is a poor one because the writing is on the actual container. Those redundant boxes wrapping bottles, both with labels, is probably done simply for shipping and make theft more difficult, along with tricking the users into thinking there is much more product in the actual containers. Those are the products which would be great to illiminate at least one of the packages, and that might be something which could be changed by designing different shaped containers which are easier to pack and ship in bulk.

but there are font size requirements for packaging, and if you have only the big package with the labels on the shelf but not the take home products... .
.
.
that is where I was coming from.

There is much to be done in the way of container designs. I forgot who was telling me that they know the guy who created the new gallon sized plastic paint containers. He ran a recycling place, and didn't know what to do with all of the recyclable plastic, so he created the square plastic, easy pour paint cans. I'm sure they stack much better, they pour much better, and the lid opens via a screw cap rather than a nickle or screwdriver.

I love them but since they are not the traditional paint can, they do not fit in the paint can shaker at the store, and so the old-school stores tend not to carry the brands that have the pourable plastic containers. Pity, because (for example) Pratt & Lambert makes great paint.

Just one of the reasons why making changes to containers and packaging can be so hard. I applaud little businesses like For the Health of It for showing the flexibility to make the change and creating awareness. With awareness comes demand! :clap_1:
