Biting Flies

Hi guys,
I usually just lurk here, but I love everthing about this board. You have always helped me with everything that I need. I love all of the pictures and help with any info I need. I am coming down to SOWAL on the 16th tru the 23
I noticed on the weather sites that the Wind is going to be coming out of the North. Oh No, everytime that we have been there with a North Wind the Biting flies have ran us off the beach. Can anybody gives us heads up on the biting flies? I can put up with seaweed and rain before the pesky flies. Keep up the good work on this site, and I would like to meet all of you.

Scarlett, the name....

I dont know what to do about the flies and I have not experienced them .....yet. Maybe someone else will know what to do....

It was very still on the beach this evening with plenty of flies but they were not biting.

This is the time of the year they start to get bad. Often, there will be a north breeze in the morning, but it shifts to an onshore breeze once the surf begins to build.

Of course, if there is a cold front hanging around, you can pretty much plan on a prevailing north wind.

Went for a walk this morning on the bike path and the dog flies were out and biting.

Seems that the cashier at the Tom Thumb has made our Laborday vacation a success!!! She suggested vinegar (remember "you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar"). We bought a bottle (white vinegar $1.39 for a bottle) and put it on this morning and the flies still landed on us but jumped off pretty quickly without biting us.

We have not tried it in the late afternoon or evening but we will be this evening. Kurt or SJ does this work or were we just lucky this morning??

We hope it still works later today.

There are several suggested remedies on this thread including the white vinegar solution and Smilin JOe's concoction as well.

We were down last weekend for Labor Day and there were no biting flies the entire weekend.:clap_1: :clap_1: :clap_1:

I would much prefer wearing apple cider vinegar. I guess i will try that if anyone else hasn't.
