oh! are these acceptable?

I guess the question is: are they recognizedl by the county, and will contents actually be recycled?

thank you JC.

Yes, they are acceptable. As mentioned above, the inmates do sort through all the trash for recyclables, but are "trained" to go for the blue bags first. The contents are actually recycled, inasmuch as there is a market for a given recyclable material. While many materials are recyclable, it's hard to get vendors or processors to take them if it's not economically viable for them to do so; i.e., if they can't make a profit from it.

It's not hard- we keep 2 bins in the garage and take them to the blue trailers every other week. Haven't used the bags in forever- harder to find and keep those around than throw the stuff in the back of the car and drop it off at the bins on the way to somewhere else!
I took my recyclables to the trailer before I used the bags. I will do so again. I wish we could get all restaurants to recycle.

Used blue bags for a lot of yrs in cheeseland. Upon last visit, blue bags are going away, and being replaced with plastic bins. Go figure. Thought the bags were a better way for all concerned for recycling.

Bins are better if your town has recycling trucks - easy for the workers to either dump the whole bin into the glass, aluminum, whatever section of the recycling truck, or even if the bin contents are mixed, it is easy to quickly sort from the open bin an make sure everything is recyclable before it goes into the truck compartments.

I wonder which local restaurants make efforts to recyle or better yet - reduce, reuse and recycle... a very interesting question!!! more and more businesses are going Green - including restaurants! we now have consulting firms all over the place who work with businesses on all the elements of operating in the most environmental friendly ways possible.
(of course, reducing and recyling waste products are only two of several ways for restaurants (and businesses) to conserve resources and protect the environment).

many businesses are seeking best green practices and even becoming certified as a green place of business. of course our larger corporations such as Publix have developed very comprehensive Green programs that are used to conserve resources, educate the public and market themselves - and of course they really must do so for a number of reasons. For one, its what their customers expect! I wonder if we as consumers will eventually have the same green expectations of all community businesses, and of ourselves (at home)...

a quick google search shows a ton of info on restaurant greening. a few...

ysco has reviewed foodservice industry publications, articles, and best practices in the area of sustainability. The collective wisdom of these sources has been distilled to provide actionable advice.

dine green (green certification standards & program)

certified green commercial kitchen

(save money. save customers. save the environment.)

EPA and several state level DEP offices have countless guidelines for businesses, restaurants, etc. for reducing, reusing, recyling - hard to sort through all the BS stuff though.

seems like a restaurant (or business) would need to contact their waste management company as a first step to find out what is available for recyling programs, etc. surely at the very least, many restaurants practice reduce, reuse and recycle - I hope! I guess we can start asking! ha ha.

Blue Mtn Beach!!
I do LOVE the convenience of the blue bags at home. but the trailers are very convenient too so any effort is worthwhile!

this topic was just covered on this thread - take a look for good info covered here: http://www.sowal.com/bb/local-government/43953-recycling.html#post639099

in above recent thread, Just Curious confirmed the funding for the blue bag program was through a grant which is no longer available. and others offered info on recycling trailer locations and Publix recycle bins.

It said "page not found" on the link - is there another link? I guess I can search. So when I get out to BMB which shouldn't be that far off, I separate my garbage into what goes in compost and then what is recyclable and the recyclable goes to the bins at the locations mentioned? Recyclable would be paper, plastic and glass? And when you bring it to the bins you put it in the blue bags first and then put in bin? Thanks for helping out the newbie

The blue bags are a way to flag recyclables in the normal trash pickup.

When you put the recyclables in the bins at select locations they don't go in the bags.

good questions gidget. someone familiar with the location bins - can you help by telling us exactly what items are accepted for recycling? and how are they sorted? do you just dump the stuff out of your bin into the big recycle bin? does anyone know if there are separate rules or locations for businesses?

The one behind the Watercolor Publix has three separate sections - one for plastic, one for glass & aluminum cans, and one for newspaper. I use a plastic bag for the plastics, but the glass, cans & newspapers I just dump in.

I don't know about businesses... does anyone know if there is someplace local where businesses can recycle paper waste? Every office I've ever worked in has mountains of it, all going in the trash. Also, does anyone know where I can recycle cardboard locally?

thanks for the answers, and thanks for more questions!

okay, who knows this:

what kinds of plastics are appropriate?
is the newspaper bin just for newspaper, and not other paper?

what other requirements, or specific things do we need to know about collecting and delivering glass, plastic, paper, etc, to recyle locations around the county?

Heh, I'm always good for that!

what kinds of plastics are appropriate?
Hoo-boy, I never even considered this... If it's got a recyclable symbol on it, I throw it in there, but I honestly have no idea if that is OK.

is the newspaper bin just for newspaper, and not other paper?
It says "newspaper only" on the bin.
