I had one completely empty my minnow bucket at the lake last time I went fishing. He sat there on the dock and chowed down.

gee thanks! the beggars are annoying enough without you encouraging them - one even chased the boat around for awhile once when we were close to shore, then landed and pooped all over the bow, all the while standing there, looking sideways at you, with that " I know you have fish in there. I do. Well, what are you waiting for ? Give me a fish already! What's wrong with you - look at me, I'm a fine, fine bird, right? You bech-ya! Then give me a freakin fish! OK! (gulp gulp gag gulp), now make it two! cmon I know you want to - I'm so cuuuute..." - and they don't take no for an answer, just keep giving you that black eyed pea stare - sand hill cranes are the worst - they're bigger and pushier and don't wait for you to give them a fish - they take it when you aren't looking! i had one snatch a half slice of pizza - stupid thing almost choked on it! - it got better after a while, but watch your food around these crazy things! it could easily kill them! and don't feed big fish bones to the freaking pelicans - it kills them! and wipe your feet before you walk across my nice clean floor!

I know you might think this is crazy but I see a few Blue Herons here in Memphis every year. I have seen them in the shallow part of our neighborhood lake, and even off of what is Nonconnah Parkway or what they call Autobahnconnah because they drive like they are on the German Autobahn. I usually see one just about every weekend and even an occasional Egret. These little ponds have a swampy look to them here. Why they would come this far north I do not know.

I used to see them quite regularly in Denver. They made a good living out by the lakes in the public parks. A neighbor there said that between the herons and the raccoons, she was constantly replacing the expensive koi she kept in her little garden pond.

Yesterday I saw a heron stalking across 30-A as well as one fishing on the Cape, which for me is uncommon. Usually I just see them out at the bay.

Blue Herons and Egrets can be found in many places far inland.
