Jindal Admits Katrina Story Was False
By Zachary Roth - February 27, 2009, 12:39PM

Looks like the game is up. Remember that story Bobby Jindal told in his big speech Tuesday night -- about how during Katrina, he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with a local sheriff who was battling government red tape to try to rescue stranded victims?
Turns out it wasn't actually, you know, true.
In the last few days, first Daily Kos, and then TPMmuckraker, raised serious questions about the story, based in part on the fact that no news reports we could find place Jindal in the affected area at the specific time at issue.
Jindal had described being in the office of Sheriff Harry Lee "during Katrina," and hearing him yelling into the phone at a government bureaucrat who was refusing to let him send volunteer boats out to rescue stranded storm victims, because they didn't have the necessary permits. Jindal said he told Lee, "that's ridiculous," prompting Lee to tell the bureaucrat that the rescue effort would go ahead and he or she could arrest both Lee and Jindal.
But now, a Jindal spokeswoman has admitted to Politico that in reality, Jindal overheard Lee talking about the episode to someone else by phone "days later." The spokeswoman said she thought Lee, who died in 2007, was being interviewed about the incident at the time.
This is no minor difference. Jindal's presence in Lee's office during the crisis itself was a key element of the story's intended appeal, putting him at the center of the action during the maelstrom. Just as important, Jindal implied that his support for the sheriff helped ensure the rescue went ahead. But it turns out Jindal wasn't there at the key moment, and played no role in making the rescue happen.
There's a larger point here, though. The central anecdote of the GOP's prime-time response to President Obama's speech, intended to illustrate the threat of excessive government regulation, turns out to have been made up.

As it turns out it was actually, you know, true. God bless Harry Lee, youtube and the freshman congressman who could actually deliver rescue equipment while the rest of the Federal response was paralyzed.

I have always thought that Jindal was better than what he showed in the rebuttal speech...so, my question is: why did he let himself get "made over" by the handlers? Why not insist on doing it his way?

He had a pretty good track record--wonder who it was he could not stand up to? Rove and Associates maybe?

I don't understand why regular Republicans...not the far right fringe...are letting this disintegration happen to their party. I agree with Rapunzel, we need a two party system, but we don't need this "parallel universe" stuff.

Because it's the far right fringe that votes heavily in the primaries in much of the country, and a candidate has to pander to that crowd or they'll never make it to the general election. Crist (who managed to beat the far right Gallagher) and a couple pockets in the Northeast-Midwest seem to be the only exceptions to that these days. Conventional wisdom is that Ahnold would have never won a normal Republican primary in California because he's too much a centrist and that' why he had to win the special election after the recall.

I don't understand the analogy. Palin is a ditz with a short reading list. Jindal took bad advice and delivered a speech in a tone reminiscent of a genetic mishmash of Al Gore and Mister Rogers. Jindal has exploitable beliefs, but he is not 'Palinable'.

You're very funny! :rotfl:

I'm a big Jindal fan (and I'm not a huge fan of the party) and am disappointed at the way he's being ripped over this. He's smart and capable, and he has probably one of the toughest Governor jobs in the US.

I wish you could have seen his daily press conferences after Hurricane Gustav - he had all of the facts at his fingertips, he knew exactly what was going on everywhere. It was the very epitome of excellent executive leadership.
That's why my friend said her husband wouldn't touch that job with a 10-foot pole when he was encouraged to run for the office.

A pathetic smear. Meanwhile, back at ground zero this week, the FEMA office in New Orleans is being investigated for dysfunction that would make the most ardent proponent of government-grande pause. Among other allegations is that the employees there were instructed to stall, delay and obstruct recovery as long as possible in order to keep their jobs, many of which pay six figures. Interesting timing in that these allegations have only come to light now that NOLA's beloved champion of graft, Bill Jefferson, has been replaced by freshman congressman Anh Cao.
I saw the Jindal attack on Anderson Cooper earlier tonight. AC's panties were in a wad because Jindal couldn't have been with Harry Lee 'during the storm' like he said he was trying to get rescue boats out. Duh. Who has rescue boats out in a hurricane?

As an ex Coastie I have to agree with you 100%. The Coast Guard did a remarkable job during Katrina simply because they don't need anyone's permission to go to work. Many chopper crews had never worked with each other before the storm but because of standardized training it all came together.

By the way, what happened to the thanx icon?

Yes. The Coast Guard did an incredible job plucking people off of roofs. I truly hope that a Coast Guard monument is erected in a prominent place in the city in gratitude to their heroic efforts.

Jindal was on 60 Minutes last night. He came across much better than in the rebuttal speech. I hope people don't let that one speech define him and I hope he shows the real Bobby Jindal in the future.
