Just finished reading March by Geraldine Brooks. A great historical fiction about the father of the characters in Little Women. It is based on the life of Bronson Alcott, who kept detailed journals during the time frame of the civil war. Little Women, was based on the Alcott family. Brooks takes the structure and time line of the Little Women and gives Mr. March the lead role as a Chaplain in the Civil War. Mr Alcott was a great friend to Thoreau and Emerson and weaves their relationships and philosophies incredibly into the social problems of their time and not only taking a stand for what they believed in but putting it in practice as well and the effects of their actions.
The reviews for this book are all glowing. "The pictures that Brooks paints of the war-ravaged South particularly on the liberated plantation, are haunting. This richness, of time and place and of March's unrelenting struggle to live up to the man he thinks he should be, makes March a spell-binder." The Denver Post
My bookclub read it and I missed the discussion. I just had to share this!
Forgive me if I am posting this in the wrong area. I'm sure Kurt will move accordingly.
