Is this being considered because folks have an issue with all the Caucasian Canadians who come here illegally? I'm under the impression the issue folks have is with Latinos. I've never personally heard anyone beotch about illegals who were Asian or Dutch.

Ha ha Maarten and Haatje are going to be deported!

Riddle me this-
why now?

We have citizens and elected officials wanting to amend an amendment to the constitution that's been in place for well over a century. Why the call to action today when violence in AZ is on a three year + downward trend, when deportations are on an upward trend, when the national guard has been committed to the borders, etc etc. Why not 4 years ago? Or 8 years ago? Why not 12 years ago or 16 years ago? Why now?

P.S. Same question for mass tea party protests against spending and taxes. Why now instead of during other recent times when spending was out of control and taxes were where they are now or worse?

Here's one more for y'all:

I keep hearing that it is wrong or lacking in common sense to give a social security card to someone just for spending 40 weeks in utero.

I presume that that's all each and every person commenting on this thread had to do to achieve his/her US citizenship. We were lucky enough to be born here. Is it right or does it make more common sense that we tell someone else who's just being born that their time served in utero doesn't apply because their parents are Latino or Canadian?

Since the Iphone doesn't allow you to add to a post here comes the third in my series-

I am from the Midwest along with the mother of my kids and my oldest child. My youngest however was born in FL.

Drinking beers and watching SEC football I have been reminded many times by southerners that I am a Yankee and that the only member of my family who is a Southerner is my daughter.

I have been here longer than she's been alive. I have immersed myself in the culture, learned to cook the food and speak the language. I've assimilated in many ways. But I will always be a Yankee and my daughter- because she was born here gets street cred.

This sentiment makes sense to so many of the same folks who suddenly see no wisdom whatsoever in the 14th amendment.

Again- why now?

I think that most people tend to not pay attention to the details when everything is going good. A lot of folks are using coupons now that wouldn't have bothered with them a couple of years ago.

Couple the deficit with the long, long period of unemployment we are facing along with states and municipalities teetering on the brink of bankruptcy or dissolution and similar things start to happen. People are worrying that the financial future of the nation cannot continue to support things the way that they are.

Why are so many more people worried about oil drilling now than were a couple of years ago. After all, we've been drilling oil in the Gulf for over 50 years. Why worry or change that now?

Thx for answering. So when times are tough we should focus on people who have it tougher (illegals)?

And I don't get the oil comparison. When u ask the same question (why now) the answers include:

the end of a quarter century federal moratorium

state legislators attempting to quietly open waters traditionally off limits to anonymous oil interests

an unprecedented oil spill which led to an economic and environmental disaster

Because we have a very serious immigration problem, and one of the factors that plays into it is citizenship as a birth right.

I honestly don't know what the hub bub is about. We gain little and lose little over this provision. If it can be shown that this provision heavily influences illegal entry into the country, it makes sense to undo it. (Or we could just secure the border?)

As far as amendments go though, this is small potatoes. Lets get term limits, abortion rights, or a line item veto passed first.

Sorry, I didn't mean to make it so subtle.

Your point earlier was we've had this for a long time. Why consider changing it now?

If that's your philosophy, why ever change anything? Why re-examine any practices because, clearly, nothing ever changes.

I guess its lucky that the folks passing the 14th Amendment didn't have that attitude. After all, we'd gotten thru the first 70 or 80 years of the Republic without it. Why change it then?
