President Bush on why he hasn't played golf since 2003:
He went on to say this about the timing of his decision:
He spoke about this moving golf sacrifice on Tuesday, and when I first heard his comments it literally made me sick to my stomach -- and among the many reasons I was grateful that Skunky didn't join the reserves to help get through his residency, I was especially thankful that he were not in Iraq right now when Bush made that comment because I know beyond all doubt that my head would have exploded.
Just the thought that giving up playing golf is in any way a fitting tribute to the sacrifice 1% of our population is bearing alone to wage this war proves just how completely lacking in the leadership qualities necessary to manage a Publix store this President is -- let alone be POTUS. It's always horrified me that when Americans wanted to do something, were ready to sacrifice, and needed a sense of purpose we were told to go shopping and take out ARMs. His response to Katrina left me irate -- and watching how differently the Chinese have handled their earthquake aftermath this week has made me realize our country is not what it should be, is not living up to its promise.
Invoking the name of Sergio de Mello was a nice touch, and did win a little admiration from me until I watched Keith Olberman's special comment last night and learned that (1) the President didn't give up golf in August 2003, when de Mello was killed, but October of that year; (2) the President quit playing golf after tearing his meniscus.
It is simply unfathomable how this man came to lead our country.
Keith Olberman had a very insightful commentary last night -- and while I concede that MSNBC is sometimes like Fox News for people on the left, this piece is outstanding and worth watching.
His entire special comment can be seen on these two videos, but if you just prefer the part specific to the golfing it's on the second link.

"I don't want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander in chief playing golf," he said. "I feel I owe it to the families to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal."
He went on to say this about the timing of his decision:
"I remember when de Mello, who was at the U.N., got killed in Baghdad as a result of these murderers taking this good man's life," he said. "I was playing golf - I think I was in central Texas - and they pulled me off the golf course and I said, 'It's just not worth it anymore to do.'"

Mr. President," he was asked, "you haven't been golfing in recent years. Is that related to Iraq?
"Yes," began perhaps the most startling reply of this nightmarish blight on our lives as Americans -- on our history.
"It really is. I don't want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the Commander-in-Chief playing golf. I feel I owe it to the families to be as -- to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal."
Golf, Sir?
Golf sends the wrong signal to the grieving families of our men and women butchered in Iraq?
Do you think these families, Mr. Bush - their lives blighted forever -- care about you playing golf?
Do you think, Sir, they care about you?
You, Mr. Bush, let their sons and daughters be killed.
Sir, to show your solidarity with them - you gave up golf?
Sir, to show your solidarity with them - you didn't give up your pursuit of this insurance-scam, profiteering, morally and financially bankrupting war.
Sir, to show your solidarity with them - you didn't even give up talking about Iraq - a subject about which you have incessantly proved without pause or backwards glance, that you may literally be the least informed person in the world?
Sir, to show your solidarity with them, you didn't give up... your
4,000 dead Americans and your response... was to stop playing golf!
Golf.

After watching that whole segment it seems that Keith O. does not like our President and is an angry, angry left winger who needs to get some fiber in his diet and take a potty break. Then again - "American is just downright mean" so I guess I should have expected it.
I watched this last night and cheered at the end. I'm glad at least one member of the mainstream media is calling Bush out on his disgusting, disrespectful, idiotic comments. Golf, indeed.
