Every time I drive past Butler Elementary I see rust stains all over the front of the building from the sprinkler systems spray. It's such an attractive school you can't help but think it should have a better maintenance program.

(1) How much could it possibably cost to pressure wash the outside brick walls and window sills?

(2) With all the landscaping companies in South Walton can't they fix the irrigation systems so it wouldn't spray all over the building and windows?

(3) All the beautiful bronze scuptures in the front are covered with green moss.

Has anyone else out there noticed?

1. A lot, generally a pressure washing is going to require paint when it's done.

2. More money, unfortunately since the school board is going to have to cut staff I don't think this is truly a high priority.

3. Doesn't bronze do that naturally.

Love you to death hun, but with the current financial crunch I don't think this is an "emergency". However, this community is strong and perhaps some gentle nudging of some local contractors to donate services would be in order.

Building maintenance should be covered in a different fund so would not affect staff.

You don't paint brick, and like you said with all the landscaping/contractor companies they could probably get a decent bid. The bronze sculptures are very expensive peices of "art" and deserve a clean up after 13 years.

I agree with wrobert, this has nothing to do with the school cutting back on teachers salaries.

The point being, walton county chose to build schools in this area where they are publicly observed. It's the counties responsibility to preserve/maintain them for the public eye.

ps  you too!

I've noticed the water rust stains too. I had to deal with it with our white fences and all it took was an adjustment on the spray nozzels. I cleaned my fence with a rust remover concentrate from WalMart. It might work on brick...not sure. As soon as that remover hits the fence, the stains instantly disappears.

Cleaning Outdoor Bronze Statues and Sculptures

This is a great site that explains the care of Bronze Outside Statues and the "green" that covers them.

No, you don't paint brick, but you do paint window trim, cornice, etc. Those usually get hit when you pressure wash.

Walton County did choose to build a school there, but Walton County also chose to cut taxes. ;-) Unless it's needed to prevent damage then people might just have to live with it until the money is there or someone volunteers to do it.

Hey swgb maybe you need to take a look at what your commenting on.
The school doesn't have any trim around the windows. The windows are set into the brick. The eaves are vinyl there isn't any paint other than the doors.

I've had approximantely 114 views and several pm's of parents also in agreement stating the school is in need of maintenace.

Hopefully this message on the board will get some activity started or plant a seed in the right garden. ;-)

If you get a chance cruise over there and look at it, you'll agree.

The bronze sculptures turn green naturally and is considered a verdigris process. The rust stains are typical of all buildings in that area due to the mineral contents in the water. Before complaining you need to check out other public buildings in the area. I am not sure if the Principal of the school has time to cruise through SoWal perhaps rather than posting on here you should go directly to the source and let your views be known to the Principal. Telling everyone else on here won?t accomplish what a phone call to the Principal will. Aren?t we thankful that Butler is an A school and are children are getting an excellent education? :D

How about if a group of parents got out their scrub brushes and some cleanser? That would be easy on the budget and the building/windows.

Or got the sprinklers redirected so they weren't spraying water on the building?
