Hi Ladies!

Doc wants me taking in more calcium. I am a purist and contend that I get my calcium naturally from my diet, but he wants me getting more. Good genes here and no brittle bones - Granny slipped in her 80's and broke her pelvis, but that's about it......she lived to 101.

Are y'all taking supplements? What kind do you like? Thanks for your input!! ;-)

Cheers~~~~~~~

Am guessing you have had a bone density test. Mine was in the normal range.
Had a neck fusion done about 4 yrs ago with problems following that occurred
as a result of the bone not fusing as well as it should have. Have been taking my
calcium since....I like the chewables. Caltrate with Vit D (think it helps w absorption).

No, I haven't had a bone density test. Dr. knows I don't take pills and is insisting I take calcium if nothing else. I haven't heard of chewable calcium.....I'll definitely look into that! Thank you.

Calcium leaches magnesium from your body. And bones need much more than calcium to remain strong. They need vitamins K & D, among others. This is the best product for bone health, and the best place for price:
osteocalm - Vitacost - Vitacost

We use the Natural Calm magnesium supplement, which helps with sleep and muscle soreness. My sister uses it for her son, whose mild ADD symptoms disappeared once he started using it.

Miss Critter, thank you. He said Vitamin D for absorption and extra magnesium. 1,000 mg. per day either in my diet or a combo of diet and pill......regular calcium pill is way to big to be getting enough from a multi-vitamin.

I would like to get more from my diet: spinach, milk, cheese, berries.......can I get 1,000 mg/day from my diet?

Thing is: am I doing things in my diet that might counteract the calcium I am getting? Like red wine and the occasional junk food?

I've heard good things about osteocalm.....I'll check it out.

I take Boniva once a month, Citracal daily, along with a multivitamin with D. Also, my doc is big on Vitamin D (she said it's being connected to many health related issues) so she has me taking two 1000 mg. tablets daily as well.

My mother had osteoporosis, but she smoked heavily and I don't.

Did your Dr mention weight training? My understanding is that in adddition to calcium and other vitamin and minerals it's important to do weight bearing excersize for bone health.

Log your food for a week or so and add up how much calcium your getting. Cheese, yogurt(fago is my fav), and soy milk are good sources

Here's an interesting article about getting calcium from food vs supplements.

Am digging the sesame seeds, T.Cline and all the green leafy vegetables in the article you posted, soappedaler. I just need to increase the amount so I know I am getting the 1,000mg/day......that's going to be the hard part. :D Dr. mentioned Viactiv, but a GF takes that and says it can upset your stomach.......
