Mom has osteoporosis. She has broken both hips. When she broke the second one 10/2007, right after surgery she told the surgeon, "I sure am glad I only have two legs because I'd hate to think I had another hip to break." I am at high risk due to genetics, small bones, and a history of low estrogen levels.

I take Caltrate D, Boniva, and Miacalcin spray (nasally).

I drink milk. They don't serve it at most restaurants around here, but for at home meals it's an easy way to get calcium and other vitamins.

Are you drinking 3-4 glass/day? I use 1/2 & 1/2 and eat cheese daily. I think I am probably getting 30-35% naturally already. I can increase by whole milk in the afternoon and the sesame seeds.......just want to stay away from the pill form.

No, I just drink 1-2 glasses of 1% milk (between drinking it and cooking w/ it) and eat a ton of cheese and yogurt too.

Basically I have milk where other people drink Coke or iced tea.

Thanks for sharing Scbug - caffeine is no good for bones, but I do drink coffee in the AM. No coke or tea except special occasions. Dr. is emphatic that it's cows milk, no soy. I am not a fan of soy milk anyway.

Hi Ladies!

Doc wants me taking in more calcium. I am a purist and contend that I get my calcium naturally from my diet, but he wants me getting more. Good genes here and no brittle bones - Granny slipped in her 80's and broke her pelvis, but that's about it......she lived to 101.

Are y'all taking supplements? What kind do you like? Thanks for your input!! ;-)

Cheers~~~~~~~

If you don't mind my asking (if you do, please disregard), why is the doc suggesting you need more calcium? It doesn't appear as though you have any present issues or a family history that would cause concern.

Like you, I prefer the avoidance of pills in favor of the all-natural route. While I have not put his plan into total practice, I have found tons of interesting info on diet and disease prevention on the McDougall website. You can search for his articles on calcium in the top right corner.

Per Better Homes and Gardens, almonds and mineral water are also good sources of calcium. I eat pecans instead of almonds, but since I drink several liters of mineral water a week - ka ching!

Adult women up to age 50 need at least 1,000mg of calcium/day and doc knows it's hard for us to get in our natural diets. My family is very healthy and I believe it's prudent to be cognizant and proactive now. I've learned some alternatives just by posting this.

I'll check out your link!

Thanks~~~~~

Yep on the almonds and I eat a lot of those (nuts and berries in general anyway). What brand of water are you drinking? I drink mineral water too and try to avoid those with sodium. Now that I think about it, maybe I am getting a lot more calcium naturally than I originally thought!

Cheers~~~~~

One more thing.

I went to the Farmer's Market at Jesus Junction this weekend and there was a farmer with fresh cow's milk......unpasteurized. Keeps for 10 days, blah, blah, blah.

Anyone here drink raw milk?
