I just got back from 2 weeks of teaching at a fine arts camp (plus teaching at summer school, plus graduate school!) and brought home a souvenir.

Instead of telling you how it happened, I'm going to make a game of it. We were telling the kids that one of the other teachers (a sweet, positive, continually happy drama teacher) got drunk and hit me at the kareoke bar...I need a new story now that I'm home.

Duck,Duck,Goose...gone horribly wrong?
Someone threw their clay ashtray at you?
Branch, falling rock etc. hit you during a hike?
not-so-co-ordinated dancer on the loose?
lighting rig fell?

It was a hot, sultry night. The large canvas was leaning, empty up against the wall. Paint, arranged like a color wheel, was melting on the table. She stood at the door, white shirt dripping with the days humidity. Suddenly, she saw him standing down by the bay. One lone breeze stirred the air. Should she leave the throng of over-stimulated young artists who had been cloistered around her all day to have a moment of adult conversation. Perhaps not. But then, he turned and looked directly into her eyes. She gasped, stepped out the door and quickened her pace down the dock. Just before she reached him, a giant heron squawked with surprise. Startled, she tripped and fell face first into the pole at the end of the dock. To be continued...

Ooh...liking this game so far.

Clarification, if it matters: the camp was at a college campus in downtown Gainesville (Georgia) so no lakes, herons, hiking, etc. But since we're making this all up, I guess we can put it wherever we want it.

The duck-duck-goose sounds fun, especially if we mix it up with a wild heron.

As for the lighting rig, that has happened at our camp before. The theater is haunted. Pretty cool. We actually went ghost hunting on Monday, but our ghosts were shy.

She didn't remember hitting the pole or how she got into the old boat house at the far end of the deserted dock. Fog was setting up in the distance and the art room was fading from sight. The bell from campus was ringing in the distance and voices were fading away. Her head was spinning and she wasn't sure whether she was alone. Was he in the room with her? How did she get here? Where had he gone?

Spinning head is pretty accurate, but we had a lot of alcohol in the faculty housing...:D

Extra credit for helping me get RID of my souvenir! Dad said, "Oh, it will be gone in a few weeks..."

The paint was peeling from the walls. An old bed with a scrolled frame was pushed up against the wall, rusting from the rain that had splashed in from the screened window left open for years. Next to the bed, a small table stood with its pride of age showing. The top was worn smooth to the warm wood and several layers of paint were exposed in a random pattern. An ice bucket was the lone adornment and was surprisingly filled with a bottle of champagne.

Unfortunately, there was no glass in sight. She thought about getting up from the old green uphostered chair she found herself propped up in . It was musty, damp and smelled like the moss hanging outside the window. Pushing up with one arm, as she found her other sore from her fall, she fell back down into the spongy cushion. Then, there he was, or so she thought.

His eyes were the most captivating she had ever seen. There was a moment when she knew this might go in a direction she might later regret. He walked slowly toward her. Reached into his pocket and took out a small handkerchief. He carefully picked out a few ice cubes from the bucket and wrapped them into a ball. Taking her chin in his warm hands, he lifted her head and gently placed the cool cloth on her swelling and blackened eye.
