Buy some Capture at Home Depot. Use the Capture pre-spray for the bad places. Rent a floor buffer. Sprinkle the Capture on the carpet. Use the buffer to rub in the Capture (if it's just a small area, I do it on my knees with a small brush and no buffer). Wait according to the package directions (at least 30 minutes unless you overloaded with pre-spray).

My husband developed Capture back in the late 70's. Oreck calls it something else, but it is hubby's Capture.

Even those carpet cleaning companies who say they are using a "dry" product are not using a really dry process. It's like washing clothes and not being able to rinse them. The cleaning residue is still there, and it actually attracts more dirt.

BTW my husband is no longer with that company and thus receives no honorarium for this product. But it is still a great product. One would never use anything else if they understood the chemistry of it all.

Beach runner i've always been skeptical of carpet cleaners as many just seemed to soak the carpet then when it dried it looked crappy again. but i decided to use chem dy out of destin. i had huge black marks on my carpet that looked horrible. i tried capture and several other products to get the black marks out and never could. then i got chem dry and man oh man it looks brand new, 6 weeks later it looks awesome as they got it all out so now i'm a believer. i was going to buy all new carlet this winter but now i don't have too

Once we used Chem Dry, and the carpet looked dirtier after a while. The dirt wicks back up to the surface (I can't explain the chemistry and physics of it -- not my thing). Black marks? Surprised that Capture didn't take care of that. The only thing it hasn't cleaned for us is dried-in red Gatoraide. I dunno why, but hubby could answer that if he were here.
