Cedar or Vinyl Fencing?

Yes, the posts and framework are treated. I really don't know if the leaching of chemicals into the soil is much of an issue. Cedar posts(and virtually any other wood ) will rot when left in the ground. The cedar turns a nice silver gray and doesn't crack and warp over time like pressure treated wood fences.

Technology has not gotten to the point that you can keep color in vinyl. It absolutely will fade. I sell against vinyl in the business I am in merely by having photos of vinyl over time.
It is a great low maintenance material, but it does not take UV well.

Either treated or cedar will have the best chance, but even those will require some type of maintenence eventually. There is also new materials that are a combination of reclaimed materials and possibly some plastics that is to be all the rage. It is used in decking and has the feel and look of wood, but is supposed to be more resistant to rot and UV. Trex is the trade name I recall.

Look up a material called Kebony for an all wood alternate.

Along the lines of what ASH was saying--there are products out there made of compressed plastic. You find them being used as an alternative to railroad ties. They won't rot and there is no creosote involved. I'm not sure if they make fencing out of it.

Seriously? Cedar won't crack or warp? I thought it would...

Good thought--I had a client who actually put bamboo over chain link--the chain link added structure and the bamboo hid the chain link.

The only bad thing I foresee about it is that it will be difficult to espalier to it.

I thought about that but the bamboo is far enough apart so it looks, that we could use the wire - couldn't we?

Here's some of our fav pics - as we have granite lanterns and will have koi pond so this is a really cool look. Will also be incorporating some edible landscaping.

Once I get this fence decision down then it is on to whether or not I want concrete floors lol! And if so, do I want acid stained or integrated dye that is stamped! SO many decisions! :roll::roll:

Yes, you can even use something like fishing line for your espalier. It's just hard to espalier directly to the bamboo. Where there's a will, there's a way...

I just found a link with a recycled fence that looks just like wood but has the wear of vinyl. Whatever I get MUST be 8 ft tall too. Been living w/closest neighbor over 2 miles away so I need to have some privacy or I'll go into a decline lol!

You don't see too many 8 ft fences around here. Is it even legal?

I haven't seen many either - but our neighbor has one and it looks wonderful. Hers is cedar. I looked at the fencing regulations and it seems to be ok. However, it might not be best idea what with wind anyway, perhaps a compromise of 7? ;-)
