Last year, I worked with a woman whose 8th grade daughter was finally diagnosed with this disease. The diagnosis is non-trivial,and the symptoms can vary somewhat from person to person. But the scary thing is that her lovely, talented, and very bright daughter became clinically depressed--scarily so. The dietary adjustments are now easier, given the fact that it appears that a significant minority of people are prone to this disease (and in fact, when I was touring colleges with daughter last year, one college dining service even had a "Gluten-free" line for their students.

Bright spot--after a number of months, and some vigorous medical work, my colleague's daughter was properly diagnosed and began a gluten-free diet. This year, I understand, she's doing wondefully. But she had to withdraw from school, and last year was a pretty bad year for her and her mom.

Take care, JohnRudy--get really good medical advice.

Hello everyone out there especially ones that have allergies and Celiac. I've been on a gluten free diet for several years after being diagnosed by the blood test and a biopsy. I really had a difficult time at work focusing on anything and everything..thought I was losing my mind. I never heard about the disease until being diagnosed, but it has been such a blessing to know. I do have problems with recipes, etc. & not real talented in the kitchen, so I basically eat the same things over and over. I don?t drink alcoholic drinks, but I believe most wines are OK, but check with your doctor. One of my favorite websites is www.glutenfreeforum.com /www.celiac.com I enjoy reading the forums. Also, I belong to the Celiac Sprue Association www.csaceliac.org which prints a notebook yearly (can be overwhelming) which has store brand names of items that are suppose to be safe. You have to have strong will power? My heart hurts for young children with the temptations and peer pressure that they encounter constantly with this disease. I do notice the longer you stay off gluten the more sensitive your body becomes!
