Last year, I worked with a woman whose 8th grade daughter was finally diagnosed with this disease. The diagnosis is non-trivial,and the symptoms can vary somewhat from person to person. But the scary thing is that her lovely, talented, and very bright daughter became clinically depressed--scarily so. The dietary adjustments are now easier, given the fact that it appears that a significant minority of people are prone to this disease (and in fact, when I was touring colleges with daughter last year, one college dining service even had a "Gluten-free" line for their students.
Bright spot--after a number of months, and some vigorous medical work, my colleague's daughter was properly diagnosed and began a gluten-free diet. This year, I understand, she's doing wondefully. But she had to withdraw from school, and last year was a pretty bad year for her and her mom.
Take care, JohnRudy--get really good medical advice.
