We will be driving from Seagrove to Charleston in the middle of March and I would like your opinions on:
1. Driving directions
2. Places to eat in Charleston
3. Things to do such as a walking tour, historic homes, shopping
Thanks

Get on www.fodors.com to their American travel forum and you'll get lots of current info. Charleston is a favorite destination (and rightfully so). Another place is www.tripadvisor.com, and of course www.mapquest will get you driving directions (though I prefer my Garmin any day ;-)).

Buy a copy of the Lee Brothers Southern Cookbook and read it cover to cover before you go. No kidding.

We did a carriage tour, loved it.

Really like Hyman's Seafood Company restaurant. Definitely go to the Old Market for shopping and just browsing.

Anson's is fabulous but on the expensive side for dining. Home, the Edmondston-Alston house on E. Battery.

Have a wonderful time, it is one of the most beautiful places in the US.

Hyman's is pretty cool. I like it too. Just go downtown and you will find plenty to get into. Tour of homes, when they have it, is a great way to see the architecture as you take a leisurely stroll through a very nice part of town. Plenty of art galleries and restaurants in that downtown area. I've been only a handful of times, but loved each trip.

As a relatively new SC resident, I am also still exploring but here are some ideas. The most important to us is always food. For lunch, try Surmet (sp?) on King St. It's good and is not too pricey. It's a little place located on a corner, just north of Charleston Place. For dinner, we like Hank's or the restaurants on John St. They vary in price points but are very good. Have Shrimp and Grits at least once!

You should definitely plan on spending a half day just walking around the area between Broad Street and the Battery. That's the older area and has the typical Charleston sideyard houses, beautiful gardens, etc. Also, a tour of homes or carriage ride can be fun.

Finally, if you like shopping make sure and set aside time for King St. and the Charleston Place shops as that is what they are known for.
