I am flying to Charlotte in the fall as part of a trip.

Any warnings/suggestions for travel and/or sightseeing there? (I am thinking I might get there a day early to make damn sure I catch my connecting flight.)

Typical delays, airlines/times to avoid etc. would be appreciated!

I can't tell you anything about flying there because I always drive.

I love Charlotte, and it has lots of cool things to see. My favorite area is the NoDa neighborhood. (I can't tell you how to get there right off, but I'll look it up for you before fall.) Lots of funky little places around there. Matthews is a pretty part of town, too.

I'm too lazy to research it right this second (I'm on vacation!) but I promise I'll give you a list soon.

ok, if at all possible i would avoid rush hour times for airport. 485 and 77 are not funn during that time, if you're renting a car. i would stay uptown(it's downtown but called uptown) you can walk and discover the area. if you're into more of a practical stay a friend of ours stayed here for business and had no complaints Hilton Charlotte North Carolina Hotel - Downtown Charlotte Hotel - Charlotte, NC Hotels
if you're into more elaborate there's The Blake Hotel | Charlotte NC
in uptown there is Mint Museum of Art - Home, DISCOVERY PLACE | igniting wonder since 1981 | CHARLOTTE NATURE MUSEUM | IMAX | Discovery Place with the Charlotte Observer IMAX Dome Theater and the Charlotte Nature Musuem are the things to do in Uptown Charlotte, North Carolina. Visit the Discover (i listed discovery place bc of imax, it is very kid oriented so you more than likely will opt that one out.)
also you could check this place out, grab a drink and people watch US National Whitewater Center //// TAKE IT OUTSIDE !!! \ | Home
if you like shopping there is southpark mall Simon Malls | More Choices ?€” SouthPark Information, SouthPark Gift Cards and close to the mall is Phillips Place, Charlotte, NC
in dilworth there are so many funn shops. one of my favs is Paper Skyscraper
we love the penguin it's a charlotte staple Penguin Drive-In - Charlotte, NC, we would go on sunday's and i would get a bloody mary and chicken tenders.:D yummy bbq here (southend location) http://www.macspeedshop.com/
never had a chance to go here, bc mr. aggb wouldn't go with me, but it looked funn and if i ever get back to charlotte i'll check it out.
The Thirsty Beaver - Plaza Midwood - Charlotte, NC

hope that helps you out. i miss charlotte soo much. it's the most beautiful city i've ever seen, and it spoiled me. if you have anymore questions let me know and beachbound02 may have some more options for you as well.

i totally forgot about epicenter http://events.charlotteobserver.com/charlotte-nc/venues/show/878135-pavillion-at-epicenter
and http://www.strikecitycharlotte.com/ both in uptown.

Just saw this thread (haven't been on Sowal in a while). aggieb has great suggestions for places to go. If you let me know what you're looking to do, I'm happy to give a range of places to go. If you like going out, Epicentre is the place to be these days - right in the center of uptown with lots of options. But there are plenty of other great places around town.

I agree with all; Charlotte is a wonderful city and I miss it very much. Uptown is great but I always liked the Dilworth area (fun and funky with lots of charm and history and lots of good restaurants). There is a really nice bed and breakfast there although I don't remember the name of it. If you get a chance, just drive through the Meyer's Park area, adjacent to Dilworth and just south of Uptown, it was conceived by the same person who designed Central Park in NY (we had a cute 1916 bungalow there). Walton County could take note of what is really good planning, i.e. walkable communities. Let me know if you want any specifics and I'll be glad to respond.

Can you guys recommend a good (cheap but clean n safe) hotel w/ airport shuttle and access to uptown? I want to see a bit of Charlotte and explore the downtown area you are recommending, but the airport is the main focus/destination.

Charlotte is a great and easy airport to navigate, if you are adventurous try the Morehead Inn in Dilworth. Probably cost you a little more than $100 Dollars, but well worth the investment. Just Google it and call, they are probably struggling as well. You could get something for less but what is $50 if you want a total experience (I do know we are all in hard times). :D Totally
