my country, but not right or wrong. philosophy, not religion helps me deal with my mortality. my only fear is that your "loving" religion wants to control everyone's lives.

I hear what you are saying but careful to judge. Many here and elsewhere use religion to further their spirituality and help provide a structure and a philosophy for life. It can be useful.

But when we think that we actually know all the answers, based on what our religion has taught us, we are very shortsighted.

I don't know the answer to your question and I never will.

For not knowing the answer, you gave a very logical, thoughtful one to the question, IMHO. The question itself is ludicrous and I do not believe there is a right or wrong answer or even a logical one. It is the individual's concept of what is important in life and it only, in the end, applies to him/her.

Why is the question ludicrous?

You're a military guy, Andy. Isn't there a hierarchy of-

unit-corp-god-country (Marines)

Are they ludicrous for taking a stab at it?

somebody drilled that stuff into their skulls so they could focus on the mission (country). every business needs to know their mission. including the business of government.

Carnival 2011 - Alan Taylor - In Focus - The Atlantic

Religion gives people a reason to celebrate life and death and provides hope for those that have none. For that reason alone it has a prolific positive influence in our lives, even for those that don't believe.

As far as government is concerned, our Constitution spells out it's involvement in federal policy quite clearly. I don't see what the big deal is.

The big deal is that lately some seem hell bent on changing that.

Politicians are always trying to change things. I was recently told I had to purchase private insurance because I'm not trusted to handle that aspect of my life on my own. A few years ago somebody told me I couldn't gamble online because I can't handle the responsibility. If somebody tries to tell me I have to attend church or follow a particular religious doctrine, I'd be equally offended. That's why we have a Constitution and Court that upholds it. We just have to make sure we put the right people on that court, some politicians think they can change things without a vote through who they nominate. We can prevent that as well by electing the right politicians to higher office.
