Best overall bet with Zicam is the fast-dissolve tablets. It's basically zinc acetate (more effective than the zinc sulfate in Coldeeze) and it works by blocking the bug from reproducing itself. That's why you can sometimes ward off a cold completely if you catch it early enough for your nat'l immune system to take over. If you catch it too late, it will run its course, but in a fraction of the time, since you're not constantly reinfecting yourself.

The mouth spray is ok but a little less effective. And run, don't walk, from the nasal spray...it's caused issues with lots of ppl, including myself. Lost my sense of smell for a couple days. Some have lost it permanently, and there are lawsuits. Stick with the tablets.

Beyond that, I have some other great cures involving apple cider vinegar, ginger, hydrogen peroxide and various other all-natural remedies--all pretty effective-- that i will share, if asked to. ;-)

A votre sante!

I'm glad you said that. I tried that stuff once and it was horrible. I was expecting a nice, fine spray of mist and what I got was a stream of some gooey stuff. Awful.

And it seemed to almost make my congestion worse.

My brother swears by some stuff I saw the other day. I think it was called Airborne or something like that.

Airborne has some substances in it that are not recommended for children, so read up on this stuff. I was surprised, but have avoided it since. Zycam really does work, but I liked the nasal spray better that the gel. That gel will gunk up your head in the worst way and the consistency of it is revolting. The stuffed up head is preferable. We have a friend with a very exclusive restaurant here and one also in NY. At the first sign of anyone in the kitchen or on the wait staff getting a cold, he sends out for a Zycam for everyone. He swears by it and it has helped me ward off colds on several occasions. Another excellent deterent for those of you who are flying is a saline nasal spray---keeps your nasal passages moist so that they can fight cooties as natured intended. Our family doc says the dry air and dehydration is what is bad about plane travel, not the business about "recirculated air."

There is a really nasty bug going around in the NE now, that I picked up when in New York over a week ago. It is a bad head cold, accompanied by nausea and muscle aches and pains, plus a fever. It starts as a head cold, gets better the second day, then nails you with the full symptoms on day three. A couple of our group had it. We thought it was the bird flu. Coming around now, but...whoo, whee!

Funny you should ask! Just this week I was talking with a client, and I was wheezing with a cold. He was telling me to try his old family remedy of "sippin tequila and a hot bath with eucalyptus." I've heard several people say this before, so I tried it. Got some Patron, sipped a couple shots, and drew a very hot bath... I have to say-- it worked! I was amazed, frankly. I woke up the next day feeling almost perfect, like they said I would. (I only had a medium cold.) So, I dont know, maybe the tequila just disinfects you from the inside out as you're sweating it out? I will definitely try this again next time.

I had a friend try to "sweat out a cold" with Jack Damage (a full glass) ... Dumb Arse woke up the next morning with a cold and a hang over :funn:
