Fooey on Columbus Day! Every year I can remember, I have always had an important deposit to make, along with a pile of bill payments to mail out, and this silly little holiday sneaks up on me every time, and I'm stifled. Not only that, but I never get any Columbus Day presents... Fooey!:dunno:

LOL that's funny. No Columbus Day presents? UPS just delivered a package so they are running and you could say I got my gift.

I am curious to hear debate about this though.

I think we should definitely celebrate Columbus Day, but we shouldn't completely ignore the fact that it wasn't a 100% positive thing for everyone involved. Obviously history is written by the winner or conqueror so a balanced view is always a good thing.

P.S. Columbus never actually set foot on the continent of North America, just outlying islands

P.P.S. My ancestors "discovered" America about 500 years before Columbus!

I got nuthin' against Columbus, but there's no build-up, no fanfare to this "wonderous celebration"... no dancing in the streets...and anyhow, how come we don't have a holiday for Americus Vespuces (or whatever his name was). Didn't he get closer than Columbus?

Amerigo Vespucci's exploration was focused on South America.
He is known more as a cartographer and inventor of a good way to determine longitude. We did name two continents after him though! :D
