Congress balks at cuts to wasteful defense spending

Probably because those programs represent quite a few jobs and it's an election year - the C-17 program employs 30,000 people in 4 states.

The whole article just pisses me off. I can understand politicians defending a program that means lots of jobs for their district, but they seem to have no concept of finances and reality whatsoever. I can see shutting down a project and losing your district jobs being an election issue, but a .05% difference in a pay increase or trying to be fiscally responsible doesn't make for quite as good of mud slinging.

Despite Gates's talk of vetoes, two House subcommittees last week approved $485 million for the second engine next year.


If not, perhaps you could highlight the section stating that it is the "dems"....
