I think we are so driven to chartiy because it fullfills a need in us. It's hard to stand by and do nothing -- so we give. And by giving it has allowed us to "help", to be involved in a "solution" to a problem that we can't fix by ourselves.

Great! But why do we feel others should be obligated to give to charities or at least judge those who choose not to?
