Kunstler is guilty of linear thinking in a non-linear world.
He notes that the US burns 20 million barrels of oil daily and then goes on to fitful extrapolations. Our oil usage peaked in 2005 and is now ten percent below the peak. We as humans do change, we do adapt. Kunstler seems to believe we are machines on autopilot with no free will.
Spoken like a true collectivist. It is an irony that the building blocks of society include strong notions of individualism. Using firearms in defense of our liberties is embroiled in the Constitution and in our historical fabric. Presumably, Mr. Kunstler would feel safer in Washington or Chicago where gun ownership is tightly controlled by law.

The latent encoded behavior of Southern culture includes an outsized notion of individualism and the belief that firearms ought to be used in the defense of it. This is a poor recipe for civic cohesion.
