It taste good that way. It is similar to eating corn while it is attached to the stalk and still growing. It just doesn't get any better anywhere. Give me a little fresh fish, pickled ginger, and soy sauce, and I will let you fish the rest of the day.

Well I would definitely keep you full. Just stay out of my cigar minnows! I enjoy watching people eat sushi, I'm just not a big fan. I'd rather have it cooked.

Hey Landlocked,
Have you ever tried bonita? Everyone around here tells me they're no good for eating. Too bloody, or something like that. But out in CA once, I had some in a restaurant and it was delicious (although I would be the last person to suggest that respectable people do something just because they do it in California :laughing1 ).

Two different species with the same name? Or are we relegating a tuna-like delicacy to the trash-fish bin?

I don't know the answer...where's that marine biologist?

If you cut into a bonita, you'll know you're not dealing with tuna. Bloody mess. I've heard of people eating it, but I'm not gonna try it. It may just be one of those regional differences. Who knows? Maybe we're missing out.

Something else to add, for a baitfish, bonita is alot of fun to catch. They don't give in easily. Rodbusters

The captain I go fishing with says he has a Japaneese group that he takes out every year and they eat the first fish on the boat as soon as it hits the deck. Talk about fresh sushi! It's still moving

I was planning to hook up a charter when we pop down at end of month (presuming I still have a place to lite - maybe find out today) - self, wife, & son (16). Any captain/boat recommendation? Haven't done that before & have nothing to go on but ads/info on local web sites...

I haven't been much in the immediate area (I mainly fish out of Orange Beach but hopefully that will change soon!) From what I've seen this guy is great. He pops in on the board every once in a while and he also has a good photo gallery of past trips. Check him out.

Good luck!

I'm with you SJ.

I like them little minners they fry whole in Italy. But, I saw some of the old guys eating them right out of the water which looked like a frat trick to me.

Thanks! Would be just the ticket for me. Absent gulf beach, my idea of good time is fly-in fishing in Canada - 8 guys on a 13K acre lake, two cabins, one outhouse, plenty of beverages, boats, walleye (to eat) and 30"-45" pike (to spar with an throw back), and not a soul within 200 miles. :D

Unfortunately, I will not likely get my wife out onto the ocean in anything less than a 48 footer (for which I expect to pay dearly). Maybe once ocean baptized this year, I can coax into angey fish next year ;-)

I got lucky with my wife. She's the one who books our trips!
