She looked great in that beautiful hand sewn dress. The news said that it was worked on by 40 women in India for three straight weeks. I hope it wasn't an India sweat shop that was used to produce that dress. I personally like America Made garments myself. (Keep our money at home.)

I was also impressed that this gala dinner was attended by Hollywood elite supporters and other Chicago supporters of his Election. it was a beautiful party in a tent (? which (looked more like a palace)...that tent and party must have set the American Public back a few dollars.

With all the folks and families I know that are out of work or struggling to meet the needs of their family...I was glad that the White House opted only for a few photos and not full coverage...no use rubbing those struggling to make ends meet with an over the top dinner show.

So you won't "worry" too much.....the dress was put together in the designer's studio in NY and the embroidery work was done in his father's shop in India. That dress and several others were provided to her by the designer at no cost. Since it was a huge hit, his American based company should receive a healthy boost in revenue....Keeping it in America....

As for your comment of your preference of American made garments, you must have a very limited selection, since almost no clothes are made in the U.S. anymore....

I'm sure that you had the same opinion when "W" was in the White House having State Dinners while we were in two wars spending billions and sinking the U.S. into our current abiss.

A beautiful dress! That's the best Michelle Obama has ever looked to me. The shawl is great.

My thoughts: Affairs of the White House are necessarily grand. They do and should represent the grandeur of our country. It doesn't bother me in the least. I would be embarrassed if the state dinner looked like it were done on the cheap.

The First Lady's JOB is to be a gracious hostess & ambassador and she did a stellar job by all accounts.

Both of the ensembles she wore were made by Indian-AMERICAN designers (Rachel Roy and Naeem Khan).

And she served a mainly vegetarian meal (some of which was grown/produced in the White House garden) because the Prime Minister of India is a vegetarian.

Exactly what part of the First Lady and the President having a successful State dinner is it that offends you?

Here's a link to the full guest list (including the Republican Gov of Louisiana) in case you felt it was too much of a "Hollywood gala" and not enough of a government event.

Here's the guest list - First Read - msnbc.com

I really like Michelle Obama and she does look beautiful in this pic!

President Obama is a lucky man! It seems he, too, feels lucky she is his wife and that is charming!

We sunk ourselves into this abyss, "W" had nothing to do with it. (Democrats. it's always somebody elses fault.)

Tini' friend you are correct. "W" had nothing to do with it, because in reality, the Penguin was in charge......;-)
