The star Achemar is directly south tonight nearing the horizon now. Jupiter is SSW, 435 million miles from Earth and quite bright tonight. The reflected sunlight from its surface takes about 39 minutes to reach us.

This is the time of year when I'm thankful for living on a dark street. Was afraid the new lights over at Seagrove Baptist would eff that up, but mercifully they leave them off much of the time.

If you have an Android phone download the Google Sky Map application. Once loaded you simply point the phone at the object and it'll identify it. It also has a search function to locate planets, stars, or just about anything else in the sky.
