It makes me smile to think how many kids will have a summer hotdog as a good memory on the beach.

The “dog days” of summer are coming to an end for Jerry Baldwin, owner of Dog Man Du.

It has been a good season for the hot dog stand at the foot of Main Street in Rosemary Beach, and Baldwin plans to return by Spring Break of 2012.
“I sell a lot of dogs on this beach,” said Baldwin, a Panama City Beach resident. “I have to say the children are exceedingly polite. The parents should know they’re doing a good job with their kids.”

A hotdog runs $4 at Dog Man Du, and a “Dog Man Deal” of hotdog, chips and soda is $6. Don’t ask for lots of extras, as this is a basic beef hotdog and simple condiments. But know you’re participating in a new Rosemary Beach tradition: It’s not a walk to the beach unless you’ve grabbed a hotdog along the way.
Baldwin described himself as a “Navy brat” who moved all over the place as a youth, finally ending up at Florida State University in Tallahassee, where he got a business management degree.

“And here I am, running a hotdog cart,” he said. “It’s an enjoyable job, meeting the people, seeing the kids and checking out the beach now and then. You can’t beat the view.”
