Thought I would pass this on. Good information.

I don't know if any of you watched Channel 5 News last night, but they did an investigation on dollar stores (including Dollar Tree, Greenbacks & 99 Cents). They discovered the Crest, Colgate and other brand name toothpastes weren't the same as from Wal-mart, grocery stores etc. The toothpastes were manufactured in many other countries and are not approved by the American Dental Association (ADA). There was even some from South Africa and the fluoride is ten times stronger than what we're allowed in the U.S. (prescription strength). They're allowed stronger because they don't have fluoridated water (like we do). So if we (or our kids) use it often and occasionally swallow it, we could be poisoning ourselves. The dollar stores declined to comment and a full investigation has begun. So stick to paying full-price at the grocery store and send this e-mail to anyone who shops at dollar stores. Are the dollar store's reading glasses ten times stronger? If so, I'm there.

That's where I get all my reading glasses, Dollar Tree that is.

I am down to one very scratched up pair- think I will head to the Dollar Tree today and re-load the reading glasses stash!

Brands that we know and trust aren't always the same when they are manufactured abroad. Remember that scene in the movie Accidental Tourist where Geena Davis and William Hurt are in Paris and he warns her about the McDonald's hamburger? It wasn't exactly made the same way as they made it in Baltimore. The French Big Mac is customised to French tastes and can only be considered a kissing cousin to its American counterpart.

Sometimes all the product has in common with the brand name IS the brand name. Merman goes to the UK on business all the time and he brings me back Knorr soup packets. I wouldn't touch them here in the US, but the English version is delicious. Not at all like the salty insipid Knorr that goes on the shelf here.

I have to admit, however, that it wouldn't occur to me to pick up a tube of toothpaste at Dollar Tree and check to see where it was made. But then again I don't buy anything that can be ingested at places like that--no telling how old it might be...I figure there has to be a reason that what costs $3 in the drugstore can miraculously be sold on a regular basis for only a buck. It's probably already been on the drugstore shelf for ten years! I stick to innocuous items like Steele Mama, and pick up the spare pair of reading glasses here and there. Much safer.

Also, the stuff you buy in the outlet stores isn't the same, either.
I bought some Eddie Bauer t-shirts at the outlet store in Destin, and the thickness of the material was literally one half that of what you get in the regular store. But yeah, the price was less.

Those Dollar stores are great for some stuff, but when you look at the yucky but cheap off brands, it does make you wonder about the supposedly regular brands. Dollar stores are, to me, really kind of depressing places (but I still occasionally shop there).

heh
Mermaid, I would not "know and trust" any McDonald's hamburger whatsoever.
Have y'all read Fast Food Nation?

I found a gem in my local dollar store-off brand Mr Clean Magic erasers (recently heaped with praise on this forum). Two biggies for $1. Worst thing I have ever seen in one was when I was in college-boxes of condoms for $1, expiration date on box exceeded! :sosad:
