i've always been told it's not the size that counts, but what you can do with it. personally i think that's a crock, but that's just my 2 cents for what it's worth

Just curious, does it work like a plug and play device? And if so, do you have to upgrade your processor to keep up?

Yes and It depends on your current processor. The box says minimum Pentium III 500 mhz.
There are a lot of P&P external drives on the market. I have had good luck with Maxtor.
