Anybody out there familiar with e-cigarettes? What brands have you tried? What brands should I stay away from (Chinese is obvious.) Have they helped you or someone you know quit smoking?

OMG! I am familiar with these! A friend/neighbor brought a pack over and we all smoked 'em. They don't do anything, except light up the end with an LCD type light......save the planet. He is trying to quit. I can ask him what his brand is, but they were in a black box and I think they recharge?

Yep, Lynnie, they run off a battery, some rechargeable. They use cartidges to produce flavor and a water vapor mist instead of smoke. Mr. C has tried everything to quit - Zyban, patches, gum, hypnosis, accupuncture, laser, cold turkey (I'm likely leaving something out) - but I think the one hurdle that nothing else has addressed is the need to have the d*mn thing is his hand. If these can mimic the real thing closely enough, they just might work. But there a dozens of companies making the things, some of which are likely to be crapola. I'm researching them online now, and was wondering if anyone had used a particular brand with any success.

Mr. C tried Chantix, too, and it turned him into a monster. See? I knew I was leaving something out. :D

MissC, I would keep doing research on these e-cigs. We talked about them in the Smoking Cessation Class that I attended. They have not proven to be safe. Here is an article on them, and as you probably know there are many more out there on the internet.

Electronic Cigarettes: Are They Safe? - The Early Show - CBS News

I have been quit smoking for 8 weeks now. It was a test of willpower for me. I used Chantix for 3 weeks and it worked for me. It is not for everyone though. If your husband is not 100% ready in his mind to quit, he will not quit no matter what he uses to help him. Check with your local hospital and see if they offer the "American Lung Associaton Freedom from Smoking Class". I attended this 8 week course and it really helped me. I got the support and information that I needed. I recommend it to everyone who is trying to quit.

I hope you husband beats this. It is very hard to do it and you just have to be committed to it. He will quit when HE is ready. I think you are a wonderful support for him, and that is very important. Good Luck.

I'm such a quitter!

I personally quit smoking after 16 years @ about a pack a day shortly after my e-cig showed up in the mailbox (6 months ago).

There are a couple important things to consider when thinking about electronic cigarettes. First, you can never fully replace the experience of smoking. You simply can't replicate the flavor of your favorite brand and you also absorb much less nicotine with e-cigs than when smoking. They are also a bit more of a hassle to keep up with. Instead of simply picking up a pack at the gas station and lighting up, you have to charge and recharge batteries, maintain a stock of "juice", etc...

All that being said, ordering an e-cig starter kit and trying out a couple different flavors/types of "juice" was , without a doubt, the best investment I've mad in my entire life and the first method that actually got me to quit smoking.

Here are a couple of links to help you out:
E-Cigarette Forum - More info than you could ever want or need about e-cigarettes.
Eastmall - Ordered my starter kit and some juice from here. Quick shipping, great prices.
Cignot - U.S. based company (removes any possible hassle with customs). Quick shipping, decent prices, but seems to be out of stock on a couple things right now.

My advice: Order a PCC starter kit here . Grab an extra battery and atomizer from them or which ever site you buy some e-liquid from. Search the e-cig forum for the "Lipton tea bag mod" (couple quick minutes = better flavor and more cartridge capacity).
Be willing to tinker around with your "juice". The two common bases for e-liquid are PG and VG. Pg gives you more of throat hit, like smoking, and VG produces more vapor with no throat hit. There truly is a ton of knowledge in the e-cig forums if you willing to sift through it all. If you have any specific questions, just give me a holler.

KD, I get what you're saying, but my faith in the FDA is, let's just say, lacking. There's no way inhaling nicotine vapor can be as bad as the literally thousands of toxic chemicals in cigarettes - which, by the way, our lovely FDA does not require disclosure of. Arsenic and formaldehyde are two that come to mind. Also, there's a nicotine inhaler - FDA approved. Nicotine gum - FDA approved. Nicotine patches - FDA approved. I do truly love Mr. C, and am greatly concerned about his health, but it this e-cig thing enables him to quit smoking the real thing, I think we'll both take our chances.

Now, let me get off my soapbox long enough to say that I am enormously happy for you that you were able to quit. I've never been a smoker; never had the least desire to smoke, but having been married to a cigarette addict for 20 years, I have an inkling (and that's really all it is, I know) of how hard it is to quit. The cigarette companies design it that way. I've read that cigarette addiction is harder to break than heroin, so you are to be commended, and I salute you!

Uncle, I will check out all those sites, and direct Mr. C to the most relevant info, knowing that he is the only one who can do this. The fact that he asked me to find out more about the e-cigs brings joy to my heart, and I will take almost any route (except Chantix - really, he was certifiable!) to help him become a non-smoker.

Thanks to everone for your input.

I have tried 2 different kinds of e-cigs and did an insurmountable amount of research until I was totally confused. I ordered the starter kits of both. Because I was doing it to try to reduce the cost and really wasn't committed to quiting, both are still laying around the house. If Mr. C doesn't have that inter motivation, it ain't happening. When my husband was diagnosed with head and neck cancer, we both quit. He, cold turkey and me, Nicotrol(prescription). I like it because like your hubby, I needed something in my hand. Gained 25 lbs. after quitting for 5 months and decided the weight wasn't worth it. Good excuse, I know. Just didn't have my inner desire. Good luck in your venture and I may pick up my ecigs one day.
