What the ruling actually said was that the college could not eliminate the women's volleyball team and replace it with a cheerleading squad to comply with Title 9.

Sounds like the school was already playing pretty fast and loose with Title 9 - dropping male players from the rosters and adding females for reporting purposes, then changing it after it was submitted to the Dept. of Education.

I think cheerleading is a physically demanding sport, but I don't think it should count for Title 9 at the expense of more established sports focused on head to head competition.

Scooterbug is right about what the ruling meant.

I don't think "sideline" cheerleading should count as a sport toward title 9 compliance. But I don't see why competitive cheer shouldn't count for compliance.

Most schools choose to comply with title 9 by making the amount of scholarships available proportional to the amount of students of each respective sex in the student body.

The problem with that now, is that many colleges have more females than males and there is no womens sport to equalize football.

In tennis, women's teams have 8 1/2 scholarships for 12 players. Men's tennis has 4 1/2 scholarships for 12 players.

It should be criminal to allow that to happen and hide under the spirit of equality.
