Citing Deficit, Obama Freezing Federal Worker Pay

President Barack Obama on Monday called for freezing the pay of 2 million federal employees, saying the move is the first of many difficult decisions that must be made to slash the nation's mounting deficits.

"The hard truth is that getting this deficit under control is going to require some broad sacrifice, and that sacrifice must be shared by the employees of the federal government," Obama said.

The two-year freeze would apply to all civilian federal employees, including those working at the Department of Defense, but would not affect military personnel. The freeze is expected to save more than $5 billion in savings over two years, $28 billion over five years and more than $60 billion over 10 years, White House officials said.

With the massive pay raises that Federal employees have gotten in the past 4 years (relative to what was going on in the private sector) its too bad that we don't cut some pay as well as freezing it. Its not like there would be a mass exodus of employees to the booming private sector.

The president finally caved to his big government beliefs. Perhaps it was the europeans laughing at his policies that they have tried and failed at that made him think alittle clearer.

The Healthcare bill in itself added 4K more government departments. The government is way over paid on every level yet they still get raises.

This freeze is way too little way to late. Im stunned at how economically dense this president is.

The private sector is dealing with pay-cuts all across the board. Thats if that private sector company is still open for business..

The freeze is for 2 years.

Given the strong position you are taking on gov't spending and the economy is it fair to assume you are in favor of allowing the Bush Tax Cuts to expire?

The savings is $5B over two years with the proposed pay freeze to control the deficit which this President seriously contributed to 'stimulate' our economy.
