Acyclovir (generic Zovirax) is on the WalMart $4 prescription list. Pain goes away faster if you take it. CamphoPhenique is available in a gel - not always easy to find but it seems to work better than the liquid. You can buy both of these, enough for several outbreaks, for less than the price of one Abreva.

Cashews seem to trigger them. I read somewhere it has to do with the amino acids in cashews. Lysine is an amino acid, might change the balance back. :dunno:

This works!
When you first feel that little tingle, get a full sized ice cube & rub the area with the cube until area is frozen. Do this until the ice cube totally melts. This will keep the area from progressing any further & will typically stop the virus from developing into a sore. I have been doing this for years & it has never failed to work!

well, I was thinking about you while protecting my lips from this thread the last few days. one of the best ways I have found to help prevent those horrible things is to take care of your lips every single day all day. moisturize at night, moisturize and protect during the day with good lip conditioner with sunscreen. lipcolors now come with all this so its pretty easy. I keep all kinds of good lip balms, conditioners, etc all over the house, in my purse, in my car, etc.

this does not stop the virus but I have found that good lip care keeps the virus from turning into fever blisters - most of the time.

diet and overall health play a role too but whattayagonna do. take care of the lips.
