“I have no ambition in this world but one, and that is to be a fireman. The position may, in the eyes of some, appear to be a lowly one; but we who know the work which the fireman has to do believe that his is a noble calling. Our proudest moment is to save lives. Under the impulse of such thoughts, the nobility of the occupation thrills us and stimulates us to deeds of daring, even of supreme sacrifice.” - Chief Edward F. Croker FDNY

Welcome to the most honorable profession in the world, Chief Croker is a legend on the job even to this day. I had occasions to relocate to the quarters of Engine 33 and Ladder 9 on Great Jones Street on the lower east side which was at one time dept headquarters when the FDNY consisted of only Manhatten. Chief Croker actually lived in the fire house with his family. To this day it still has the longest poles on the job.
I did 20 years in Tower Ladder 7 FDNY(ret)
