In wake of the recent pet food recalls, I thought this website might be of use to some of us that are thinking about other alternative foods for our pets. Some on this list, I never would have thought of being harmful.

Food List.

So I should stop feeding my dog chocolate coffee every moring? ...and I need to stop feeding him string? I see that citrus extracts are on the list. One of my dogs has eaten most of the Tangerines on my tree.

i don't get the part about the bones:

Table scraps are not nutritionally balanced. They should never be more than 10% of the diet. Fat should be trimmed from meat; bones should not be fed.

bones are sold as edible for dogs. not that mine get any, but this goes against common behavior. would have been cool if a little backup was offered.

thanks for the list, great info. we blew pot smoke into our beagle a couple of times back in high school. she went to sleep.

bones such as chicken and pork, as well as cooked beef bones, can and will splinter, and this is probably what they are referring to. According the RAW diet, raw beef bones are actually good for the dogs. I'm no expert and my dogs don't get bones.

Hey y'all-I've said it before, I'll say it again. Look at this list and heed it! If dogs were meant to eat people food, they would be able to drive to Publix and grocery shop. Do yourselves and your dog a favor and feed him dog food.

It is great to want to make homemade dog food for a treat occasionally, but good quality pet food has a lot of research behind it and contains lots of vitamins and minerals to keep your pet healthy. Iams and Science Diet are 2 examples- I know their vets and researchers on staff know a heck of alot more than I do about what nutrients my dogs need. It is difficult to include all these things when trying to make your own dog food.

Sure, pets get substandard nutrition all of the time and survive, but why not give them the very best chance? Don't scrimp on their food quality- you don't skrimp on yours do you? This tainted food problem will pass, and will cause pet food companies to pay more attention to their suppliers.

I'm all soapy now.;-)

I noticed marijuana is on the list. My golden retriever is going to be very disappointed when I take away her daily bong hit.

I will offer some backup from a personal experience with bones. My little dog that I used to have grabbed a chicken bone from a plate that was left in his reach. He ate it before I could get to it. The next day when he had his morning poop, I heard him scream out in pain. I immediately took him to the vet. The bone that he ate the night before had cause a huge tear in his rectum. It had to be stiched up. He was in pain for quit a long time. It could have torn his intestine, thankfully it did not. So, that is my backup.

When we were shopping for a standard poodle of show quality, many of the breeders whose dogs you see at Westminster asked that we sign a contract saying that we would only feed our dog the BARF (bones and raw food) diet. One of these breeders has great instructions at her website (a website that *really* needs updating). The URL is http://www.ridgewoodpoodles.com/raw_natural_diet - prep.htm, and it has six pages of instructions with photos. The last time I talked to Cathy, she had seven standards of her own and spent an hour a day preparing food for them. To keep a show coat on a standard takes thirty minutes of daily grooming plus four hours once a week. Obviously, she spends all of her free time with her dogs (which might explain why she hasn't had time to update her website). Her husband died, and they had no children, so her dogs are her family.

thanks darlene. very helpful! I guess I have to take away Lulu's tobacco products.. , I was surprised to see garlic and onion! I've often added a little of this to my homemade dog food (brown rice and lamb, with carrots, celery, etc), as suggested by the vet.

agreed jdarg - our homemade dog food can't be nutritionally complete - but its a nice supplement and treat. gotta remember to leave off the garlic and onion though...
