Does anybody know why both teams in a professional football game do not use the same footballs? It would seem the fair way to do it?

Would you want a bunch of strangers playing with your balls?

LVT, you are 100% correct!!! And, no, I can't answer your question, but you certainly make a very valid point.

Because every quarterback likes his balls to feel different. His balls get a special rubdown from the ball boy. When his balls feel absolutely perfect, the QB doesn't want anyone messing with them. The league acknowledges the fact that everyone is looking for something different in their balls. They allow some degree of variation within certain limits.

Another way of looking at it is that it wouldn't necessarily be fair if they played with the same balls. Suppose on game day, the refs happen to make the balls perversely soft. Some QBs might like it that way, and they would be at an advantage over the QB who would prefer their balls to be just right. I think it's too difficult to expect refs to know how to precisely measure pressure down to .01 PSI at a particular temperature taking into account variations in atmospheric pressure. They are not really up on Boil's gas law from what I understand. Then they have to make sure their measurement equipment is properly certified and calibrated. Do you really want scientists in white lab coats hanging out in the multimillion dollar anechoic ball chamber certifying the balls and signing off on them under penalty of perjury? Of course not and that's why they give you a couple of PSI leeway and allow the QBs to go with what feels good with respect to their balls.

Yeah, I heard some of them like their balls scuffed up, but that seems a little harsh. And deflating them...??...I would think you like to say you have the biggest balls.

The problem is during game time men do not want to play with another team's balls. So each teams provides 6 balls to the ref. Playing with each others balls then is the only option.....in front of 80, 000 people nonetheless.
