Sadly, the freebox was being abused by those who chose to overlook the spirit and abuse the karma. The town was on the verge of shutting it down, as people were dumping unusable garbage there instead of properly disposing of it. and maintenence of it was becoming too expensive(it is completely cleared on monday mornings via a front end loader by one person. but one person can't lift a refrigerator) also, it was becoming a source of income for those who would hang out there all day waiting for good stuff that they would grab and sell elsewhere. I stopped taking stuff there because they were like vultures, and they'd barely wait till you put the stuff on the shelf.
It came to a head and a citizen's coalition group stepped up and has begun to 'police' it so it wouldn't be dismantled. a tighter set of guidelines has been established, there are monitors there during 'peak' times, etc...
remember, it is a 25 year old institution, there have even been books written about it. we can't even keep people from drowning themselves here, or taking their stuff from the beach daily, i doubt the tourists would give it the time of day.
