A couple of points from the "safety gal" about face painting (I used to do this for museum events, plus have to be super safety conscious for kids' art classes):
-you should be absolutely sure there is
no glitter - used alone or within the substance of the paint -it can scratch the cornea. We all know how kids rub their eyes. The same thing goes for art supplies. I would definitely not use it when kids might handle any animals either. I recently ran across a girl whose eye surface was so damaged by wearing glitter eye shadow for halloween that she would never be able to wear contact lenses. Glitter used anywhere will always come back to haunt you. It will also be in your carpet for the rest of your days.
-Face paints should be certified with the AP (approved non-toxic product) label (any art supplies for kids should also be AP as well. Crayola is usually good about being certified non-toxic with their art supplies, but you would be surprised what else is out there that is just not appropriate for kids to use. Many paint pigments are carcinogenic or just plain scary when you think about them being used by (or worn) kids (think cadmium red, etc).
-clean and sanitary practices with paintbrushes and other face painting tools - just like you would expect when having your makeup done
C'est ca! Carry on.....
