We are going to Mobile for the weekend soon- what are some area attractions that are interesting and funn? This is our first visit, and I am clueless.

Does anyone have a favorite hotel or restaurant?

There are a few good restaurants on Government Street and cross streets downtown. One, which I forget the name of, is inside what used to be a train station or such. The battleship is kind of cool to explore. Fort Conde is OK if you are interested in history. You might drive down to take the Fort Morgan Ferry to...Fort Morgan. But I think of Mobile more as a milestone to or from SOWAL. Exactly 2 hours from NOLA and about 2.25 to 2.5 to the bay cottage. Maybe somebody has more of an idea what to do there.:dunno:

Mine and Pea's mom is from Mobile. Eat at Wentzel's for good seafood.

I have to agree. They have geat seafood. I lived there for 7 years. I am sorry but I don't have anything great to say about it. I hated living there. Could be because I just have terrible memories of that place. However, the battleship is really neat. Sorry to be such a Debbie Downer. I hope you have funn though!!!!

I spent a month working in Mobile after Hurricane Ivan and LOVED Mobile! The people are so very warm and friendly! Be sure you drive to Dauphin Island; it's a cute little beachy town, and the beautiful white sandy beach will even remind you a little of SoWal:love: While you're there, don't forget to tour Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island

Dick Russell's Bar-B-Que in Mobile's Tillman's Corner has the yummiest homestyle breakfast. For dinner, Copelands New Orleans Restaurant and Bar.

On Mobile Bay, after you tour the Battleship be sure to stop by the Oyster House for lunch or dinner. In addition to oysters (I'm not an oyster fan, but I'm told they're yummy!) and a selection of great seafood dinners, their cheese grits are delicious!

Definately Wintzell's, but be sure to go to the original one in the historic section of downtown Mobile, Dauphine St. It's been there for as long as I can remember. It will give you a true taste and feel of the South.

Also, Bellingrath Gardens is very pretty at any time of the year but now they are decorated with Christmas lights. http://www.bellingrath.org/

The architecture around Mobile with the lacey wrought iron, huge oak trees draped in Spanish moss is spectacular.

Even the docks on Mobile Bay are pretty cool with all the gigantic international ships. Just don't go at night. The port authority even gives tours.

Isn't there some restaurant that advertises "throwed rolls"? I always see the billboard and think how funn it would be to have people throw bread products at me.

Bellingrath Gardens is one place I want to visit. I am sure it is pretty with the Christmas lights. Our plans are to visit Bellingrath on a trip down to the beach sometime. Take an extra day and go there on a Saturday morning and then head over to the beach. They have stuff blooming year round.:D
