If there are no GM cars, then that will mean the eventual end of snowbirds wintering here.

LOL, traderx - they do have rattles in the dash. My Chevrolet is old and there are all kinds of noises, but it's a pretty solid truck overall.

It is a shame, but I vote BK, possible reorg and closing as opposed to throwing billions at a failing company.

And, the late model Impalas aren't even good lookin! Not like the 1970 model.....can someone get a pic of that one? I think our family car was the '71 or '73? Red with a white vinyl top - LOL and black interior!

Yes the old ones were cool. And these new ones are so geared toward sales folks and other company types that the radios come preset to AM talk radio.

My Ten Point plan to save GM

  • Chapter 11 bankruptcy ? this will allow GM the luxury of reinventing itself.
  • Move headquarters to Atlanta.
  • Form a close relationship with Georgia Tech including engineer recruiting. Georgia Tech is ranked the number one industrial engineering school in the country.
  • Establish some manufacturing in the furniture belt in NC. Thousands of workers have been displaced as the result of moving furniture manufacturing from the US to Asia. These workers were skilled and earned $12-15 per hour. Many commuted to work from Appalachia and were gold standard type workers.
  • Renegotiate UAW contracts from $47 per hour to $15 per hour. It is better to have jobs that pay $15 per hour than no jobs at all.
  • Cut Ivory Tower waste. Cut staff to the bare nub.
  • Robotocize plants as much as possible.
  • Eliminate divisions that are not viable, e.g., Saturn and possibly Buick or Pontiac.
  • Eliminate cars that don?t offer probability of profitability, e.g., Saab.
  • Bring in a new chairman to run GM even if out of retirement. Jack Welch comes to mind.

They could re-open the Doraville plant.

 Robots ...

Asimov's "I Robot" was the second piece of science fiction I read as a kid. I love his three laws of robotics, way ahead of its time, at the time.

Obviously, HAL lost sight of these laws.

  1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  2. A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
