Right here!
Sens. Thad Cochran (Miss.), Susan Collins (Maine), James Inhofe (Okla.), Dick Lugar (Ind.), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Richard Shelby (Ala.) voted against an amendment to food-safety legislation that would have enacted a two-year ban on the spending items.

Unfortunately only Lugar will face a primary challange in 2012. Murkowski was expected, she's a major porker and campaigned on the fact. But Cochran and Shelby?

Oink Oink Oink!

Why do people in Alabama and Mississippi vote for these two?

This vote means we won't see another shot at an earmark ban until the next congress takes shape in January.

Are you really surprised that representatives of two of the poorest states are going to turn over the nation's pursestrings to the Administration. Alabama, Mississippi and Alaska would likely go banktrupt or resemble a third world nation without federal funding. While some states are donor states (pay more in taxes than they receive from the federal government), MS is a benefit state receiving benefits more than double what they pay into the fed gov in taxes.

Or maybe they decided that giving the FDA power to actually legally compel food sellers to recall tainted and dangerous food products instead of just politely requesting that the company stop selling salmonella-tainted meat or produce was too important to get lost in some sort of totally unrelated to the original core bill pissing contest over earmarks.

The original bill is a Very Good Thing, IMO, and shouldn't have ammendments tacked onto it that will make it harder to get reconciled and successfully passed.

IMO this bill does not go far enough and shows just how toothless the FDA is.

Anyone else think it is appalling they can't make companies recall tainted products?

Or that the biggest issues - meat and poultry are still not addressed? Hello lobbying!

Just goes to show how fundamentally alike both parties are. They are both full of indentured politicians who could care less about anything beyond their own fame/power/money.
