We are going to be grandparents in the next few weeks! We are SOOOOOO excited about our new granddaughter (her name will be Kaylie) and want to find out what wisdom you have to share. What suggestions do you have, what fond memories do you have of your grandparents or of being grandparents, what would you do differently or the same, fun ideas, etc. you get the picture. Thanks so much for sharing (and pardon my gushing)!!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

some of my favorite memories...

1. I loved hearing my Grandparents stories about when THEY were young!
2. I loved that on each of our birthdays we each got to spend our very own private day with them... doing something of our choosing. Mostly what was best on that day was not having to share G&G with siblings, cousins, or anybody. That made us each feel SO special!
3. In later years it's especially precious to remember the many "old fashioned" lessons and lost arts they shared/taught us... like cane pole fishing, crocheting, tatting, quilting, canning, learning to like weird foods like rhubarb, cutting fresh flowers for family graves EVERY "Decoration Day" ... then spreading old quilts in the cemetery grass, sharing picnic lunch, and being told family genealogy stories in company of the WHOLE Family... passed & present.

Grandparents... Passers of the Torch & Treasures of Gold!

to see the world again through the eyes of a child is to experience a wonder that words do not express adequately.

Enjoy every moment with your granddaughter and know again the joy of the simple pleasures of life. I have learned so much from my son and my grandchildren.

i loved being the only grandchild for 10 years, to a papaw who always wanted a girl and got 4 boys. i spent pretty much every free moment until i was 15 with my paternal grandparents. while monetarily they had nothing, they provided me with the best, most rich memories of my life. i still miss my papaw every day

I think the general idea is to spoil them rotten. After you have succeeded, give them everything they want, and then give some more. If you have anything left, leave it to them in your will.

Yep..that's my philosophy. The word "no" does not exist in my vocabulary when it comes to the grandkids. Unless of course it's something crazy/dangerous. But, ice cream for lunch...sure, staying up til midnight...sure, telling them crazy stories..sure, letting them monopolize the computer..sure..you get the picture. :D

How exciting! I have no real advice but enjoy.

Have you picked a name for yourself or are you letting the little one do it? One of my friends has been called Goodie since her grandson was old enough to talk. Another has been named Honey. She was always saying "come to Nana, honey" to her granddaughter. Her granddaughter called her Nana Honey and now just Honey. How cute is that?

Spend as much time as you can with them and teach them something you enjoy!

I have some GREAT memories of my grandparents - all about the fun things we did together over the years w/o a television etc. to interrupt us.

And don't try to cut her hair! Grandma and I learned that one the hard way when she decided to trim my bangs - poorly.
