Though the Gulf was actually pretty cool during the spring of 2005. It was only up to 72F by the first weekend in may, nad Gulf Coast Triathlon was wetsuit-legal for the first time in a couple of years.
And then we got a big warming event in middle-late June, and y'all know how the rest of that summer went.
I'm getting this thread going again as my husband and I are coming down the 9 or 10th of May. I hope the water temp is warmer than 72. I realize this was three years ago but I'm wondering what the average temp is for May. I will do a search on the internet. We usually wait until the end of August. But I won't be swimming in 72 degree water. That is too cold.
Temps are cooler than last year at this time, looking back at the above posts. Surface temps of the Lakes is currently around 72F degrees, up from 68F degrees las month around this time. Using only my pinky toe to judge the temp of the Gulf, I'd say that the surface temps are around 72F at the moment. This guestimate was also guessed by Ed, who was out flying his kite board in the Gulf, today.
Speaking of kite surfing, I heard a moment ago that there were two kite surfers bitten by sharks today, I think both were in Florida, but not in our area.
There's a pretty big difference from May to August. At least in May the gulf will cool you off if you get hot. (although I do love the bath water temps in Aug) I think you're going at a grayt time...before it gets too hot, after SB and before busy summer. Have funn!!!
