It just came on so suddenly. She started throwing up that day and was gone that night. My mother (she knows the family better than I do) said that they were in the process of moving and were staying with her mother. So this little girl had a hyper-vigilant dad, mom, grandmother and grandfather watching over her. I know they had done everything correctly...even checking on her in the wee hours of the morning. So scary.

the coxsackie B which is fatal is more rare than the A. and deaths usually occur in third world nations with poor access to health care. china, vietnam and india are all currently experiencing outbreaks and deaths from the "hand foot and mouth" disease you are talking about. immediate and excellent western medical care can prevent death. but you would have to have access to a physician who would know how to diagnose and treat properly. i don't know if that is an option in this region. my guess is they would assume it's a virus and send you home with some pedialyte.

Yeah... moral of this story is, wash your hands, wash your kids hands, wash their toys (I'm bleaching out the toys at church this week, we Lysol them every week), make sure their childcare provider is doing it as well. That's the only prevention for this and unfortunately, if they ever do get to the point of contracting the Myocarditis, a lot of the damage is already done and if they do survive, a lifetime of complications is likely to follow.

A tragedy to be sure, but I urge everyone to keep things in perspective. Odds are excellent that more kids will die today in auto accidents and swimming pools than will be struck down by viral myocarditis in the next year or two (and possibly more).

I talked to my mother today. The cause of death was viral meningitis. Not quite sure why she died so quickly. It is rarely fatal and usually runs a course of 7-10 days UNLESS the person's immune system is compromised.

Wow, viral huh? That is unusual... she must have had some sort of underlying issue.
That's just terrible :sosad: Poor poor baby :sosad: My little boy is 4 (he's sleeping in my lap right now because he claims he's suddenly afraid of the dark) and I just can't imagine how horrible it would be to lose him :sosad:

I am so sorry to hear about the child and the family! My heart goes out to them. I cannot imagine losing a child. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

DH had viral meningitis as a baby. He was in and out of the hospital for about 2 years begining around 9 months or so.

It just wrenches my guts, to be honest. That baby had just gotten sick that day. You just don't run to the doctor every time your kiddo starts throwing up. Sad, sad, sad.
