I've been known to say, "If you don't vote or pay taxes, you can biotch!" Write a letter to the powers that be. You're just one person, but if we all flood them with letters expressing our positions on this, that and the other thing, they will listen. We are the ones who hire them.......put in your letter, "Fire the coach!" Maybe they'll get it.

I used to agree with that thinking, but lately I get the feeling the "powers that be" are ignoring us. And I don't think it will change anything to fire the coach. Sorry for the hopelessness!

If I thought it would make any difference for all of us to go to Washington and plead our case, I'd start packing right now....

I do believe 2010 will be a political bloodbath - turn over the incumbent! Doesn't matter if the incumbent is Dem, Rep or Indy! Get 'em out of there!

Agree in general about personal accountability. That said- media studies prove that media agenda setting determines what we think (or at least what we think about).

Which is one big reason why I conscientiously avoid exposure to mainstream media. That, and my desire to maintain some semblance of sanity.

Have you guys seen any of the commercials for the American Issues Project?

They look and feel like negative campaign ads by a 527 group. This one starts out as if it is an attack on nonpartisan government spending but it becomes apparent that it is really an attack on Obama and "Congressional liberals". It even manages to throw in Jesus. I saw it run on CNN last night (of all places) and it kinda pissed me off.

Wow, the reference to Jesus was simply a reference to time..period. No morals, no philosophy, no teachings.. just when he was born.

What if they would have said Mohammed and referenced the year 500+- would that have offended you?

The more I see how the government is recklessly spending money, the more I think Ron Paul should have been elected. I knew he didn't have a chance because he was not really a part of either party, being that he didn't quite fit with the Republicans. (He was basically the only one at the Republican debates against our military presence around the world -Chuck Hagel I think was another. And he didn't have the sexy personality or 'looks'.

But Ron Pauls fiscal knowledge and opinions are refreshing and rather simple. I watched some good videos on youtube where he discussed the Federal Reserve, monetray policy and the current path we, as a country are on.

I remember during the debates thinking, wow, this guy makes a lot of sense. Anyway, hopefully next time we get somebody in there who will not really be a part of 'either' party really. This big government thing is a little scary. The short term might see a shot in the arm because of it, but I see bad things to come from what is happening now. I don't know if behind the scenes they are just agreeing that they will just inflate things so much by printing and then repay our debts. I just wish we'd have financial discipline instead of insulting those that we borrow from by repaying them in that way.

As far as the commercial, honestly, I don't have a problem with the commercial. Some people may not get that perspective unless someone pays money to show it in a commercial.

I totally agree. But the media is setting the agenda such that Joe Sixpack is PO'd about AIG bonuses and such. That would be like someone coaching my wife to overlook the $500 strip club charge on my credit card statement but to instead become outraged that I wasted our money by hitting the drive thru on the way home...

Maybe she's concerned about your health. $250.00 a bottle champagne is better for you than a Big Mac and fries.

Jesus or the reference to his birth doesn't "offend" me. I actually respect the guy and what he stood for. Oh, and neither do philosophy, morals, etc.

Lerxst, I do not believe this reference was used solely to point out that $800 billion is so much money that if you started out 2000 years ago and spent a million dollars each day it still wouldn't equal what we spent on the stimulus. That was just the guise of it.

Nope. Jesus's name and his birth was used to rally the right. It was done masterfully. Quite subtle and will likely be effective. They aren't appealing to fiscally conservative values with this commercial, they are appealing specifically to right leaning religious folks to rally against the dems. This isn't just a semantic difference.

I would love to see such commercials that rally all Americans on both sides to wake up and send message to our politicians on both sides of the aisle about out of control spending. This one only does that on the surface and is really just a republican attack ad. A good one.

What I am offended by is the mix of religion and gov't/politics.

And to answer your question- I would see the reference to Mohammed exactly as I do the reference to Jesus (presuming the ad was intended to rally Muslims).
