Okay, thought I'd redeem my smart ass, got this off the web:

The main difference is that each version will only work for a specific game platform. For example, an Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero 3 will only work on the Xbox 360 -- not the Wii, Playstation 3, and so on. A Wii version will only work for the Wii ... etc.

The versions for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 will have better graphics than the versions for Playstation 2 and the Wii since those platforms are optimized for high-definition televisions (the Wii is not -- neither is the Playstation 2).

Also, owners of the Xbox 360 will have the option of downloading more songs (and other content) via Xbox Live.

Other than that, no difference. Exactly the same.

I didn't think you were being a smart ass- I realize you don't know me. But I am probably better educated in the video game field than your average parent. I realize the graphics are similar in the two versions but I'm thinking the Wii would have to be more interactive and I'm just wondering how? and if it's that much of a difference. PS2 versions are more readily available too. But I don't want to regret buying a PS2 version if the Wii is more funn. KWIM? Also, the other night at the store I read the songs for the GH3 and they didn't seem that great.

Guitar Hero III for the Wii is the extra spiffy new one. #1, #2, and #2 80's Edition are right behind it though.

Good post. I'll ask my 17 y.o. who loves guitar hero too. He's mentioned the newer version with the newer music. I'm pretty sure he uses it on Playstation.

SIL uses XBox 360. He wears out the video games though! He likes to get new songs and all the  graphics. The one with the whole band came out a couple days ago. He's hoping a friend will get it soon. :D ;-)
Oh yeah, he wears out the John Madden Football on it too. It looks like a real game, I swear. When I go over there sometimes I think a game is on. My gull says she thinks the same thing all the time. Until she sees the controller, that is. The graphics are very good.

You do realize it's not a real guitar or a way to learn guitar? Just wanted to say that in case a little one was suckerking you into thinking it might be "educational".

We are aware of that it is not the same as a real guitar. Don't worry- he has a real guitar and a banjo, and doesn't get them confused with the guitar game controllers.

It looks like such a fun game! But sadly, the guitars ARE like game controllers and I can't make any sense of them.

My only complaint with the song list on the GHIII is that, as always, there are a few less, um, fun sounding songs (too much uber-heavy death metal). There is however some good old stuff, Sex Pistols, Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper, ACDC, possibly Led Zepplin. I think there is some good newer stuff Foo Fighters, Weezer, that stuff. I think it all mainly depends on your genre of choice:

GH I has a lot of good old classic songs from 60's and 70's (Hendrix and Black Sabbath), good punk (Ramones, Blackhearts).

GH II has a lot of songs from the late 70's and 80's, KISS, Jane's Addictions, Van Halen, limited 60's hard rock (Rolling Stones), Freebird.

GH Rock the 80's has a million 80's songs.

Yikes, kinda makes you want them all.
GH for the Wii is sold out everywhere. I do have one connection that will sell me one if I really want it. Or maybe I can have them just give it to her for her birthday or Christmas and I'll get something else. They have a few that they are going to sell on ebay. ( yea, I hate it when people do this too but what can you do ;-))
