Help, yellow fly ate me up!

I was bitten by a yellow fly tonight and my hand's swelling horribly! The bite was on my finger and the entire hand's swelling! I read online about putting onion, or, lemon juice, but still swelling! I also put ice on it and it no longer itches, but I can't even bend my finger now, from swelling!

Do you have benedryl (or some type of antihistimine) that you can take right now?
Also try laying a vinegar soaked rag on the area. This works best immediately after the bite, but can still provide some topical soothing.

Thx, DuneAHH, for your suggestion. I missed Publix, since they'd just closed. But, I did go to Tom Thumb and get some Benedryl. I'm really concerned, because this happened around 8pm tonight and it's still getting worse! Great, I have to get up in front of about 40 people and do a presentation in the mornig, with a deformed hand! Oh well, could be worse!

That sounds unusual to me. Should you call the ER or something? If it is still getting worse, you might want to be seen.

How are you doing today?
In my experience, and everyone's reaction is different, once the poison takes hold it does get worse for a period of time. At this point, it may take a couple days for the swelling & 'fever' to recede. I always find subsequently keeping some aloe lotion rubbed on also helps soothe the skin that gets SO VERY stretched out.
PS - don't be surprised if you feel some minor nausea.
If it goes beyond minor, then you might want to consider seeing someone.

The hands and the feet are the worst places to get bit. I got bit on the top of my foot last week and when it itches, the pain goes through my foot. Ouch! Go to WaltonOutdoors site and search yellow flies. There's a little home remedy recipe on there.

SSB - I couldn't find the home remedy recipe... and I'm ALL ABOUT home remedies whenever possible.
You're right, yellow fly bites do go through you. It's weird how the favored bite location is usually the veins on top of bony parts like knuckles, ankles, elbows, jawlines...

Yep, i assume they bite in those places because the skin is thin and they can I.V. right up on a vein. Visualize that.

Here is a general purpose sting relief for yellow flies. It is also helpful for mosquito, chigger and jellyfish bites.
1 tsp. baking soda
1/3 cup ammonia (Windex is mostly ammonia)
1/3 tsp. papain (meat tenderizer)
1 crushed aspirin
Mix thoroughly and store in refrigerator (be sure to label container). When needed, shake well and apply with cotton swab, and rub briskly.

I have the same reactions to yellowfly bites as you so I do sympathize. Try some ammonia on the bite. Camphophineque(sp) helps but I like the liquid formula if you can find it. I always start with cold compresses. Usually it gets better after about 48 hours. Best to you!
