AV question. Are steros about to become obsolete? Will we just need to have an amp and some speakers to plug in our ipods / mp3 players into?
What is a stereo? :dunno:

I keep all of my music on the puter and have speakers and subwoofer hooked in. It is terrific for selecting playlists and if I ever scratch or lose a cd, no problem -- I burn a new one.

That's my point. Are people now just hooking their media rooms to their hard drive? :dunno:

Heck, it will not be long before we are asking what a CD is. Download everything online.

what has happened is that the A/V receiver has outpaced the 2 channel stereo. what is becoming more common is whole house audio with local inputs/amps that are a/b switches > basically, it will play the audio from the primary until an outboard device is plugged into it, then it switches to the secondary input. great for tv's too, when tv in room is turned on, speakers will play tv output.

when media center and media servers become more affordable and windows vista is released, it will all integrate through the home network. multiple simultaneous video streams to any location in the house. ie, the same movie being streamed from different points in the movie and/or different movies being streamed. microsoft envisions the entire home to be a network, great in theory, their house in vegas crapped out three times during the tour we were on. there are quite a few variation on this theme, closed network a/v systems, complete IP based systems, etc

more confused now?

Nope, that's what was in my mind just couldn't put it into words  . We are looking at a new (to us) house. Will it be hard to retrofit this kind of tech?
Think wireless. (just sounds good -- I don't know if it is possible with all of the technical stuff John R mentioned.)

retrofit can be as much as you want to make it. and it depends on slab, crawl, finished basement, attic, etc.

as joe mentioned, there is the wireless route. phones are already there, as are network, and print servers. basic audio can be handled by airtunes, and i've seen this wirelss video device, but not seen it working.

a standard thing to look for with retrofit is a chase to use or a closet behind/bleow/above where the display is to go, if tight on space or looking to keep gear hidden. and if you are doing any renovation, using the area behind baseboards for cable runs. if you run any wire, homerun, never daisychain.
